Comment about 'Disable the Insert key in Word (disable INS & OVR mode)'

I have a comment about Disable the Insert key in Word (disable INS & OVR mode):

Although the stated solution for "Overtype" or "Mistake" mode does work, there is an easier one. Instead of reassigning the Insert key, it takes away the Overtype assignment altogether. 1. Right-click on the toolbar and select Customize from the context menu. 2. Click the Keyboard button. 3. Scroll down and select All Commands in the left list. 4. Scroll down the right list and select Overtype. 5. Select Insert in the Shortcut Key list. 6. Click Remove. 7. Click OK. It'll never, ever come back. Thank god! Cheers M@

I only wish the SHAPE of the cursor would change (to indicate when I'm in OVR) like it did in DOS.

While I appreciate the fix for Word, there must be a way to disable "insert" globally. Another annoyance: there's an unknown keyboard shortcut that enables insert mode. I'm regularly hitting it somehow in Outlook Express, Internet Explorer...EVERYTHING. (probably Word too) What the heck is it and how do I turn it off GLOBALLY?! Thanks, C.J.

Frankly, I think you guys are nuts, but anyhow... Why not just take a screwdriver and pop the key off?

I've done that on a number of keyboards because I lost a lot of work to inadventent Overtype mode... then I got Sharpkeys from http://www.randyrants.com/ (freeware) and remapped the Insert key to do nothing... and F12 to be Insert for the few times I need it. This is reversable and works on all of Windows. (You can remap other keys, too, but this is the only one I wanted...)

Matthew Bin, in case you're still reading updates to this forum, you are a prince among men. Thank you for saving my sanity.

Just wanted to add something about this tip. Make sure you the overtype is not turned on before you change it. Otherwise it locks the overtype. I followed the instructions and had to go back undo, hit the Insert key again, and redo the steps.---FYI

C.J., did you find a way to disable "insert" globally, especially in Microsoft Outlook? I appreciate getting it turned off in Word, but would like to inactivate it everwhere! Prying off the key is not an option because the keyboard belongs to my employer.

I haven't found a solution for this but in reply to this comment... I probably type the equivalent of a 20,000 word report every day between emails, sales presentation and special projects. There is most certainly some kind of keyboard combination (ctl-alt-???) that causes the computer to enable "overtype mode." This goes beyond the Insert key enabling that mode. If it were JUST the insert key, I could live with it. What pisses me off is when I'm typing away merrily, NOWHERE NEAR the insert key, I'm suddenly replacing text. That is what I'm trying to track down and disable. BTW: this seems most common in Outlook/OE, though that's perhaps because I spend a lot of time in those applications. CJ

Like others, I have found this a godsend.
But as an addendum, sometimes I DO want to use overtype mode.
so, between stages 5 and 6 below:
a) click in the 'press a new shortcut key' box
b) press "Shift - Insert'
c) click assign
d) then click on 'Insert' in the Current Keys box, and continue as below

This means insert on its own does not do anything, but Shift Insert will enter and
leave overtype mode when it is needed
Much less likely to do this automatically :)

You can also turn overtype of and on via tools|options|edit. So reassigning the overtype function isn't that necessary.

I've disabled the Insert key in Word, but you still have the little OVR box at the bottom of the window. If you double click it Overtype is toggled on or off, so you can still use it if you really want to (I think I never will!)

This is not an unknown shortcut - its so obvious everyone forgets it is there! If you have NUMLOCK on SHIFT 0 (numeric pad) is Insert. If NUMLOCK is off then it is an insert key. I don't know how to disable it. When in word you can switch between INS and OVR by hitting the tag at the bottom of the window. This still works when all other steps have been taken, but is fairly fumble proof, and shows you how it's set. Keith

OMG! Thank you so much! I have a new keyboard and could NOT get used to that. It was literally making my life as a Medical Transcriptionist miserable!!! This was so easy to do and you have saved my sanity. Thank you again!!!
