Remove ''My Bluetooth Places'' Icon From Desktop

If you've ever installed a Bluetooth-enabled device in Windows, you'll quickly notice
the seemingly-impossible-to-remove "My Bluetooth Places" icon on your desktop. I
was able to remove mine by deleting the following _tree_ from the Windows Registry
(using regedit.exe):

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}]
@="My Bluetooth Places"
"InfoTip"="My Bluetooth Places"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\btneighborhood.dll,1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\InprocServer32]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\btneighborhood.dll"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\Shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\Shell\Add a Bluetooth
Device]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\Shell\Add a Bluetooth
Device\Command]
@="rundll32.exe C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\BtWizard.dll,ShowWizard"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\ShellFolder]
"Attributes"=hex:00,00,00,a0

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\TypeLib]
@="{6af09eca-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}"

Note, the first line of the above registry entry is all you need to find. Simply
right click the folder icon in the registry editor and select "Delete". After that,
reboot. You should now see a "My Bluetooth Places" folder on your desktop. Just right
click and "Delete". It should be permanently removed now.

The only interdependency I've noticed so far is the "Explore My Bluetooth Places"
option on the system tray icon will throw an invalid path error.

Cheers.

OK, after the bluetooth installation is done you will get the annoying icon on your
desktop called "My Bluetooth Places".

I hate this icon because there's no option to remove it!

So let's get started...

Open regedit by clicking Start -> run... and typing "regedit" in the box. Push enter.

Now, find and delete this key ->

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}]

Close regedit...

Push F5 to refresh your desktop. "My Bluetooth Places" has turned into a folder.
Can you delete folders? Of course you can!

So what are you waiting for? Delete the folder.

But you aren't done yet. "Explore My Bluetooth Places" in the tray wont work!

So to fix this just copy the following and paste it into notepad and save as .reg

------------copy from here---------------------

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}]
@="My Bluetooth Places"
"InfoTip"="My Bluetooth Places"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\btneighborhood.dll,1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\InprocServer32]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\btneighborhood.dll"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\Shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\Shell\Bluetooth Setup
Wizard]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\Shell\Bluetooth Setup
Wizard\Command]
@="rundll32.exe C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\BtWizard.dll,ShowWizard"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\ShellFolder]
"Attributes"=hex:00,00,00,a0

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\TypeLib]
@="{6af09eca-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}"

Good luck!

very good tweak. however, do mention that the drive letter may be different than "C" since i noticed that the shortcut from my tray did not work. simple mod: of C:// to G:// or location of the bluetooth dlls

Or instead of installing Tweak UI, just hide the icon yourself.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}\ShellFolder]
"HideOnDesktopPerUser"=""

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu]
"{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel]
"{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}"=dword:00000001
Log off or refresh your desktop and the icon should be gone ;)

lol i had the opposite problem... in my case the desktop icon disappeared right after the install and i wasn't able to access my bluetooth places with the other shortcuts i found out that i was missing the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb} key so i created it myself and teh icon really appeared on the desktop and i was ableto access my bluetooth places and operate further .... now the only annoying thing is that i can't use the other shortcuts like "explore my bluetooth places" tried to put that CLSID key like it's stated here but no change anyone figured that one out ?

Hide ''My Bluetooth Places'' Icon on the Desktop
Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at 11:31 am
Posted by drwtsn32 (1 messages posted)

To hide desktop icon only, without losing Explorer functionality (just like TweakUI
does), try this command:

reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel"
/v {6AF09EC9-B429-11D4-A1FB-0090960218CB} /t REG_DWORD /d 0x1

As an admin, you can substitute HKLM and make the setting machine-wide.

You all do it the hard way. If you just want the icon off the desktop then right click on the desktop, go to properties, choose desktop tab, customize desktop, clean desktop now, start the wizard, click the bluetooth checkbox tab and apply the changes. It'll put the icon in a folder on the desktop. Delete the folder and its gone.

Thank you so much Trainwreck. I was a little excited (maybe to excited) to go into the Registry and fix this, but your solution worked out very nicely. You're da man!

I have used notepad and copied and pasted the registry entries as you described. What file name do I give the file with the extension .reg and where do I put it?

Just add a line at the top of the .reg file you created with the following text (without the quotes):

"Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00"

This will make it a valid .reg file and you will be able to import it.

All this is too complex... Just follow this - - right click on the desktop and select properties - then on desktop tab click Customize Desktop - then on general tab, click Clean Desktop Now icon - select My Bluetooth Places icon, then finish wizard. - A folder called Unused Desktop Icons will be created on the desktop with the My Bluetooth Places icon in it. - Delete this folder - Wallah!!!

Trainwrecks is the best, I work on computers all day, didn't really feel like fiddling with the registry, my computer at home is strictly for internet and music, I should have to "work" on it...

I found that the easiest way to remove the icon without all of the registry editing etc. just go properties, desktop, customize desktop, desktop clean-up, then "clean" the Blutooth icon. When your done just delete the folder off the desktop. Easy!

Much appreciated! All other posts seem to revolve around eliminating the item and its functionality entirely, but I just wanted the icon removed from my desktop. Your method worked beautifully. Thank you!
