Question about 'Top reasons for random, fatal crashes in Windows XP and Windows 2000'

I have a question about Top
reasons for random, fatal crashes in Windows XP and Windows 2000:
I have tried all of the possible causes listed but without any luck. Also, when
using Internet Explorer 6 with all the updates installed, I have had the system turn
off completely when I have pressed the red cross alongside the minimum, maximise
button on the top right hand corner. Any thoughts on this or what else might be
the cause of my shutting down problem.
many thanks

Red cross?? are you talking about the 'x' to close a window? you stated in your subject
'fatal crashes', but are you getting a 'blue screen of death'? or is your computer
randomly rebooting? or both? Also are you running Windows XP or Windows 2000? please
post your detailed system specs, including general age of the machine. Also include
as much information about the crashes\reboots such as apps running etc. or if they
are purely random. What exactly have you tried? apparenlty you had another thread
on this, if so direct me to it so as not to be redundant. All I can tell you now
(not crap) is that it could be hardware or software.
Typical hardware crashes might include bad RAM, CPU overheating, CPU bad, shorts
on mainboard, bad power supply, bad house power supply, failing UPS, among many other
things.
Typical software crashes might include virii, trojan or other malicious software
among many other things.
grr, gotta go my updates are installed and I must reboot.

Thanks for replying.
Yes. I was referring to the red cross to close down the browser. Unfortunately
this is not always the case. It happens without notice and it could be just as I
am typing this message. Sometimes with no message, sometimes with a blue screen.
One I have had recently was:
IdeChnDr.sys Adddress F84a62D7
Base at F849D000 date stamp 3cb4d2c0
Another was page fault in non paged area.
I have a new system running: Pentium 4 2.4
motherboard is Asus P4G8X deluxe. 512mb ram, in the processing of doubling.
Heat: 38 degrees in the aussie hot summer. have a fan near the tower letting in
extra cool air. Have updated the bios from asus. Have checked the system using
adaware spybot pest patrol antivirus.
Have read about walk about phones running on 2.4 the same as the motherboard so have
relocated that.
I am running windows xp home edition with all updates supplied by microsoft installed.
Happens whether or not applications are running. House supply is good, 3 phase.
tower fan is 400w.
Hope this helps.

Just letting you know I upgraded my ram from 512 to 1024mb and then found I had to
uninstall the "Intel Application Accelerator".
Since then, no more troubles. Everythings fine. Thank goodness.

This could also have been a bad sector on your hard drive.

Thanks,
