data loss after XP Pro upgrade from Me

I have recently upgraded to XP Pro From Me and have found that after installation
all my files have disappeared from the 'My Documents' folder and Sub Folders. I have
searched for the files not only with the Windows search facility but also with data
recovery progs such as 'Disc Investigator' & 'Recover My Files', but they have turned
up nothing. I have since uninstalled XP and reverted back to Me and run the search
process again but still no joy. Does anyone know what could have caused this or can
anyone suggest a way to get my files back ???

Are you sure it isn't just because the location of the My Documents folder has changed
since going from ME to XP?

I am accessing it in the normal manner via the desktop icon , but the folder is empty,
surley the search option would locate the specific files if they had changed location
?

But what was normal with ME might not be normal with XP. Are you sure there isn't
another, different location for where My Documents is being stored under XP?

Yes, are probably right but how do I set about locating it ? I am now running in
Me again and the folders that originally contained the data are still empty . Is
it possible that during the upgrade the files may have been moved to another location
as you suggested and after uninstallation of XP they failed to be restored to their
original location ?

"My Documents" in ME is stored in "c:\My Documents". It is stored in "C:\Documents
and settings\<your username>\My Documents" in XP. The Wereotter

Most likely, your reinstallation of ME erased the contents of the My Documents and
Desktop folders, as the Windows setup specifically states that you should back up
your documents before upgrading (or did last time I had to install).

Hi Claire
When upgrading from ME to XP, there is always the possibility that data/applications
may be lost. Not always, however, a possibility anyway.
At the end of the day, invest in an imaging application, such as Norton Ghost. You
can Ghost the entire copy of your HDD and replace as originally Ghosted in approximately
15mins to ............. depending on how much data you have on there.
Sorry to be so negative, but we have all been there before.

Good luck

The following MS KB article tell you where to look for your missing data if it gets
"lost" during an Me to XP upgrade:
Missing
Data or Program Settings After Upgrade to Windows XP
And this MS KB tells you how to uninstall XP and go back to the previous OS, if the
previous OS was NOT XPH, W2K Pro, or NT4.0:
How
to Uninstall Windows XP and Revert to a Previous Operating System
I think it would be close to miraculous if the data you "lost" going from Me to XP
survived the reversion back to Me from XP.
