AntiSpyware - the best? Show of hands

What is the best all-around AntiSpyware package out there? Ad-Aware? Spybot? Spy Sweeper? Other? Pick your weapon and a short or lengthy description why would be even better. I have found that certain packages will totally miss spyware that others will catch. I also realize that a depth tool like "Hijack This" is needed for some removals. Let it fly and thank you for your valued input!

Well, I must say I trust Spybot S&D more than Adaware. Adaware missed 9 problems... I haven't tested anything else extensively yet...

I run both Spybot S&G and Adaware. One catches what the other misses. I'd say they compliment each other

I have found that the best way to get everything is to run both Lavasoft AdAware and Spybot, since neither program will always find every problem. I like Spybot's "Immunize" feature and host file locking abilities, but again, AdAware usually picks up a couple files that Spybot misses

Very observant Bill, I noticed the same thing myself. It would be helpful if one package did the work of those 2.

I had the the CommonName Toolbar (hijack actually - cnbabe.dll) installed on one of my home boxes. Removal via Add/Remove Programs, sprung up the dreaded "removal web page". Took an absolute beating to get it off. Apparently both Spybot & Adaware were unable to do a total remove. I whacked at the registry and had to turn it off in Startup area of msconfig.

Depends on whether you want to nuke the spy/mal ware once it has arrived (updated SpyBot S&D and AdAware are complimentary and Hijack This, CWShredder used for the stubborn ones) or try and stop it arriving in the first place (aside from common sense, updated AV and Firewall there is Spyware Guard, Google popup blocker etc) It's a matter of preference and depends where you surf (personally AdAware/Spybot have only once reported anything - the first time I ran it and that was just Alexa - nothing in the 3 years since and I don't bother with a popup blocker).

Why bother having to remove it when with the three programs I supply links to will
keep it clean. Since using these, Spybot finds nothing and Adaware finds 3 or 4 items.
That is all.

I may be overly paranoid, but I use it all.

Download and install
Google Toolbar
Then, activate the pop-up blocker.

Download, Install and run
Browser Hijack Blaster
CWShredder

Download, Install UPDATE, and run
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware
SpywareGuard

Neither are terribly big.

With a hosts file installed, Spyware installation is reduced in the first place. Try the following site for info and a hosts file. You can add to the file as needed, but you also need to obtain updates periodically. http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Excellent help and input from everyone! However I am still about ready to throw my home web access out the window and return to buying only from "brick and mortar businesses" as I spend plenty of my copious free time attempting to beat the harder spies off my boxes and scanning for security compromises with the various packages instead of actually using the web. Along with the reviewer in PC Magazine I am partial to Spy Sweeper. But still, still, still (!) all the packages out there are letting stuff get by. Let one key logger get by and there's that chance my credit card number is on its way to a server across the ocean, or across town to be eventually be picked up by a identity-stealing profiler. Once the rest of the world realizes that their "secure" transactions are not actually secure and identity-stealing mounts there is a chance for a backlash against e-commerce and the web as a whole. Also the user names and passwords of browser-based email users are being sent to 3rd party servers so now those message stores could be opened by others. Browser users connecting to online databases could unknowingly be streaming usernames/passwords and sensitive technical information via key logging to unknown 3rd party servers for eventual scanning and use by others. There is an urgent need for legal action against the authors of spyware worldwide and for OS and Anti-Spyware developers to crank it up quickly.
