XP hangs whenever i try to open anything! I've done virus scans, run adware, etc. I can't figure it out!

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that my laptop would hang when I open just about
anything on my computer. It doesn't always happen, but it is getting on my nerves.
Here's what happens: I click on an application to open it. It could be internet exporer,
my computer, adobe acrobat reader, a music program, my mail client, anything really.
When i click on it, nothing happens. I can let my computer sit, and if I do, the
program won't ever open (at least, i've waited 10 minutes before, without the program
opening). I can still use open programs just fine, they aren't slow or anything.
Everything is normal but the program won't open. If I try to open another program,
it also won't open. Then I hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete, and task manager doesn't open. If
I hit those keys a few more times, Task manager will finally open, and when it does,
so will everything I tried to open before. They will always open when task manager
opens, but sometimes task manager won't open so it is still a big pain. I uninstalled
everything that I've installed lately, but to no avail. I have so many virus scans
it makes me sick, with multiple scanning programs. My virus scanning program is set
to scan every file in every folder on my hard drive, not just executables. Twice
a few weeks ago I came up with two different trojans, but they were removed and I
haven't found anything since. I've run adware and gotten rid of all that ad stuff.
I have asked my computer-engineer friends, and they have no clue what to do. I just
realized that when it gets really bad even open programs will hang, but for the most
part it is only when opening programs, and task manager always causes everything
to start working. Has anyone experienced this? It is driving me crazy, and I don't
want to have to reformat or anything that drastic. By the way, my computer is a 2.8Ghz
P4 with 512 megs of ram - It shouldn't be slow! Please help me out, i have run out
of ideas. Thanks,
-Taylor Alexander

Also run Spybot S&D and CWShredder.
Although your system may be so trashed that you'll need to do a clean re-install.
My daughter's system got that way from too much p2p garbage - she had 2 viruses and
over 400 spyware entries in her registry. Even after cleaning out all of that, the
cpu was at a 100% continuously. Finally I said to hell with it, and started over.

At the reccomendation of another friend I also ran Spybot last night, and that found
a few things that Adware hadn't found. I will have to try CWShredder as well. I haven't
seen the problem since last night after running Spybot, but I haven't used my computer
much since then. I'll have to run CWShredder too and see if it persists. Thanks,
