Question about 'Save Your Desktop Layout'

I have a question about Save Your Desktop Layout:

I have Windows XP Professional for an operating system. I would like to be able to move the desktop icons, but I am unable to do so. I have followed another persons advice on this discussion board that perhaps I need to right click on the empty area of the desktop and uncheck "auto arrange icons." I have no check by "auto arrange icons," but I am still unable to get my icons on my desktop within Windows XP Professional to move. Where does a person go to enable icon moving, or drag and drop procedure on my desktop?

Have you got a check beside the "Lock Items on Desktop". If so, try unchecking that and see what happens.

Yes, I have! This is one of the first things I tried to do, but it didn't work.

I have had this problem off and on for the last 2 years and just lived with it.

But I think the answer was in front of me all this time. I have 5 additional
users and I was the only one that had the problem of my icons moving on their own.

I right clicked on the desktop on all the others and each had a check mark align
to grid.
   Try this:
1) only have a check mark next to show desktop icons.
2) move the icons the way you want them to appear on your desktop
3) check align to grid. the icons should move slightly but will stay in the same
arrangement you left them
4)check lock web items on desktop

See IF that might keep your icons from wandering.

                                                              UncleDoug

I would Also like to be able to move stuff off the desktop to specified folders like
windows 2000. What good does it do, to add your favorite folders to the right click
"send to" shortcut if its not going to send any thing, just copy! Please if anyone
knows how to Make the files move off the desktop into folders like the previous version
of windows 2000 and below, please reply. Is there a retail program I can buy or a
quick registry edit I can do.. this is the most annyoing xp feature.. Please let
me know if anyone has found a solution!!!!

1. Open an explorer window (Windows-E is a quick way of doing this) and go to the
folder you wish to move the document to

2. Move/resize the explorer window so you can see that window and the document you
wish to move

3. Move the document to the destination folder. There are several alternative ways
of doing this

a. Right click on the item and select "Cut" the item (it greys out), then right click
on the desintation and select "Paste"

b. As above, but using left clicks and the control keys Control-X and Control-P

c. Right-mouse-drag the item to the destination and select "Move Here" from the menu
that appears

d. Left-mouse-drag the item. If you see a "+" sign (copy) as you move the mouse over
the destination, hold down the shift key to get rid of it before releasing the mouse.
