Open jpgs with Photoshop only
Friday, March 5, 2004 at 4:45 am Posted by John
(6 messages posted)
I am a Photoshop aficionado.
I would like all common image types (.jpg, .tif, .bmp, etc.) to open in Adobe Photoshop
when I click on them. However, in my XP, they default to the “Windows Picture and
Fax Viewer.” I have followed all the suggested registry tweaks in this forum to
no avail.
In addition, when I try to right-click an image file and go to Properties, and attempt
to change the “Opens With”, I do NOT EVEN SEE MY PHOTOSHOP IN THE RESULTANT LIST
OF PROGRAMS, which always defaults to the Picture and Fax Viewer despite my aforementioned
registry changes. When I browse to Photoshop and pick its executable, I am returned
to the program list featuring the Picture and Fax Viewer, and the change is not made.
My questions:
1) where can I find this Picture and Fax Viewer in order to remove it, and
2) how can I get Photoshop into the list of programs to associate with the desired
filetypes?
Many thanks,
John McL.

Unfortunately, this suggestion was already made and I followed it, to no avail, as
I mentioned in my prior post. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer remains chosen in the
file association window, and Photoshop does not appear in the list of alternative
programs. This is the point of my posting again.

probably already tried...but have you attempted to reinstall PS and choose the file
associations it presents during install?

O yes, I tried that first thing. Photoshop opens all desired filetypes if I'm IN
Photoshop; it's when I'm opening an attachment or just clicking on a common image
filetype that I get this damned Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Does anyone know
where it lives in the computer? Searches don't find it.
Cheers,
John

Unfortunately, it does not reside in an .exe file, but is buried somewhere in one
of the many .dll (I think) files. One possibility is to try scf /scannow and see
it that replaces what is appears to be a corrupt system file. You will need to have
your XP CD at hand when doing this.

No fix, but a workaround. This will unassociate image files from the pic&fax editor
and associate them with photoshop.
1. copy the stuff between the *** into a textfile, save as image.reg:
***
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\ShellImagePreview]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bmp_auto_file]
@=""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bmp_auto_file\shell]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bmp_auto_file\shell\open]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bmp_auto_file\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Photoshop 7.0\\Photoshop.exe\" \"%1\""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bmp_auto_file\shell\print]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bmp_auto_file\shell\print\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Photoshop 7.0\\Photoshop.exe -p %1"
***
2. Edit the path to photoshop.exe so it points to the right location on your harddisk
3. copy the part with the bmp_auto_file entries and replace bmp with gif, jpg, etc.
4. Put the reg-file in your startup folder
.

You need to make the account you're logged in with an administrator. I can duplicate
this problem if I make my account a "user" or "power user", and the problem goes
away if I switch it to the administrators group.
And apparently you can't just log on as another admin account and make the file association
changes... the changes will not propagate to the other users in the system.

have you tried going to explorer, folder options, file types, file extensions and
adding a new one - then you can associate file types to open with psd

I had the same problem and none of these suggestions worked for me. Here's the crazy
dance I did that finally got this to work:
1.) Go into My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types
2.) Select your first file type (.gif or whatever) and click the "Change" button.
Select a program - any program, from the list. Do this a few times until the "Restore"
button finally changes into "Advanced." Don't ask me why this doesn't work to begin
with, but whatever, ya?
3.) Once the Advanced button becomes available on the File Types tab, click it. Select
"open" from the Actions box. and click the "Edit.." button.
4.) Click the "Browse.." button and browse to your photoshop.exe file. Double-click
it and the "Application used to perform action" box should update with the path to
photoshop.exe.
5.) Click OK to go back to the "Edit File Type" window. Click OK again to return
to the File Types tab. Photoshop should now be listed as the program we use to open
this file type.
BUT WAIT - we're not done. If you still have problems...
6.) Right-click any file that's not working right, and choose Properties. Click the
"Change" button.
7.) Select Photoshop from the programs list. Click OK. Double-click to open the file.
Swear, because it opens in Windows Picture/Fax viewer again. Calm yourself, proceed
to step 8
8.) Repeat step 7. On your second attempt to open the file, you'll find that it opens
in Photoshop, like a charm...a very conveluded charm, but a working one, nonetheless.
I fancy a straight registry edit-type fix to this weird little dance, but sadly don't
know enough about it to delete and recreate the corrupted keys on my own.

Lauren thank you! THIS is what finally worked for me! I like to use Windows Picture
& Fax Viewer to preview the pictures, but then I like to be able to open them with
Photoshop Elements. By doing your little "file association dance," I was able to
get it working the way I like it.

OK, here's my problem......(Not too dissimilar)
I have PS 7.0, and it's in my right click menu when I click on an image (MS Photo
Editor is the default app), but if I choose it to open that image with PS, it only
starts PS. (Doesn't open the image)
How do I fix this?

make sure that the action (in folder options/file types) reads "path\to\photoshop.exe"
"%1".
the "%1" part opens the file.

But I don't want PS as the default program for opening images. I want it to remain
as an option in the context menu, but be able to open the image when I choose it.
(Like it should be doing)
Following your advice, I'd have to change the settings for each extension so they'd
be opened by PS. (I think)
There MUST be another way.....

Thanks Lauren, this worked for me to tell XP to open Adobe's new .DNG format with
PS. However, I did not have to go through the repetitive "do it several times until..."
steps you describe. Everything worked smoothly first time. I'm using XP2. Maybe MS
cleaned up for this release.

I managed to get ps7 to both open photoshop and the image in photoshop from the right-click
context menu after a few frustrating weeks of only opening photoshop and then manually
locating the image. Follow steps 1 to 5 in the above suggestion about registering
the jpg file type with photoshop in the Tools>Folder Options > File Types tab, by
editing the path, so it points to PS rather than windows viewer. Once you've saved/OK'd
that and are back in Windows Explorer, you'll find that photoshop opens all your
jpgs etc. Go back into Tools>Folder Options > File Types tab and change the "Opens
With" to windows fax viewer and for some miraculous reason, the right click context
menu option works!
Hope it does for everyone else too.

Had the same problem ever since I installed Microsoft office and now all my tif icons
are "Microsoft Imaging Document". Able to resolve Photoshop not showing in the list
by changing the name of the folder in the Programs/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop/to Programs/Adobe/Photoshop
and now it shows up. Weird, huh? Also did the change for "open with" to Photoshop
- the tifs will open in Photoshop when I double-click on them, but I still can't
get the icon for Microsoft document imaging to go back to the Photoshop .tif icon.
The default is now the Microsoft Office default and I cannot figure out how to get
that out of there. I believe it's the HKEY CLASSES_ROOT/.tif that needs to be changed
but don't know what the change should be to get the .tifs to default to Photoshop
again.

Hi, I do not know if you solved this or not but this is what I did and it works.
Go to start/control panel/folder options/file types/new
When the new button opened I typed in .jpg clicked advanced which opened “Associate
file with” Select the program you wish this extension to be associated with. Click
okay and when the message comes up When I clicked okay it said replace default Photoshop
7.0 Application with Paint Shop Pro ? Say yes and it works great.
