Despite having disabled the Messenger service as per instructions on this site I
continue to be swamped with pop-ups - why is this and what can I do??

There are many kinds of "pop-ups", including Messenger. To eliminate them all you
may well need to pay for a program.
You might be able to avoid many of the pop-ups by installing the following:
1) XP-Antispy www.xp-antispy.org
2) Ad-aware www.lavasoftusa.com
3) Spybot S&D www.safer-networking.org
4) SpywareBlaster www.wilderssecurity.net
The combination of all 4 will certainly be a positive step for you.

Bah.
Get Opera, it is far better than Internet Explorer (I await your abuse). Opera can
block all pop-ups except those that are actually requested by the user, e.g. those
that occur when you click a link that opens in a new window. Alternatively you can
let it deny all pop-ups or allow all pop-ups.
Get it here: http://www.opera.com/

All great ways to defeat popups. Let us recap for all who visit the forum:
1. disable the Messenger Service
2. Install and use spyawre removal program(s)
Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware,Spytware Blaster and SpywareGuard.
3. The Google Tolbar works great with IE and Any Mozilla based browser has popup
control.
WinXP SP2 will include a Popup stopper.
4. with firewall and an up=to-date antivirus. the computer should be as good as possible

Download, install, UPDATE, and run:
Ad-Aware 6.0
Spybot Search & Destroy
SpywareGuard
Download and install:
Google Toolbar & activate the pop-up
blocker.
Download and run:
CWShredder
Before running these, do the following:
Delete temp internet files and history.
Turn off system Restore.
When finished,
Turn system Restore back on.

I agree with jack the mack....Google toolbar is fantastic. Very rarely does a pop-up
ever sneak through. And it is a fine search engine, as well as a great dictionary
and spell-checker, too. Just type in a word that you are not sure of the spelling
or definition, and it will give you an answer every time!
And if you are
into saving bookmarks, Yahoo toolbar is great for that. Has a built-in bookmark
button that saves up to 1000 category folders and bookmarks combined. Duh, my viewing
window is shrinking, thanks to those toolbars, but they are great, no joke.
As
for the messemger service, the only way I was able to eradicte the bothersome pop-ups
was with this file. Go to "start" button and drop these commands in the "run" window.
Should take care of your problem permanently. Please remove the quotes prior to
running the command. "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.remove"
Good luck!

You have said it best. One other way to avoid pop ups and especially the messenger
service is to get a router or physical firewall. Now your ip is very hard to see
on the net and you have created a powerful nat as well. Configuring routers nowadays
is a walk in the park. If after all the steps we have mentioned and you are still
experiencing pop ups I would be very surprised. Good luck.

Apologies for the long answer. I am overloaded with similar problems with boxes
at work/friends/home being badly infested with spyware/malware. Loads of obnoxious
popups. System lockups. Totally useless "toolbars" (if they can be called that).
Lately I have been using my simple 2 step cocktail of "Spy Sweeper" and innoculating
via the "HOST" file outlined in a link below. I also use Adaware and Spybot as well.
There is no magic bullet yet against spyware. Download Spy Sweeper for www.webroot.com
(I use Adaware and Spybot at times too). I hate to tell you this, but sometimes
removing spyware/malware can be in some cases a non-linear process, going beyond
my simple 2 step "cocktail". To help block future spyware/malware at a link below
there is an excellent technique for modifying and locking the "HOSTS" file to send
spyware sites you encounter down a black hole via an unknown IP address. There is
also a link below to the Google Toolbar is good for popup supression. In prevention
overall, think of 4 "layers". 1.) Firewall (working!) 2.) Anti-spyware software
3.) Innoculate your XP "HOST" file. 4.) XP Security Patches. Anti-virus software
does not protect you against most spyware. Beware that "key loggers" in some spyware
can send your credit card numbers/personal info from "secure" webpages to 3rd party
servers. Press control-alt-del and look at the "Processes" tab for suspiciously
titled exe files. One detection technique is to examine the directory C:\Window\System32.
Sort the directory from latest date backwards. Look for recently installed DLL
files, which may tip you off to spyware installs as well. Check the thread at annoyances.org
below which is also informative. Rule of thumb is that a hardware firewall like
those built into current DSL/Cable routers are superior to software firewalls like
ZA and BlackICE. Any disagree with that assertion? Write back with your results.
