spoolsv.exe CPU usage 100% Duron
Saturday, May 15, 2004 at 8:02 pm Posted by Cai
(4 messages posted)
Spoolsv.exe in Windows XP is hogging the CPU 100% of the time. System is Duron 1.2Ghz
on Asus A7V with 256MB ram. When I end the spoolsv.exe process, it starts up after
a while though I set the print spooler service under component services to start
manually. Only in "disable" setting can I stop Spoolsv.exe from starting automatically.
Virus and Spybot scan done and system is clean. Microsoft KB does not have anything
on it.

Did you get a fix for this?

I had this problem on one of our computers. As it turns out, there were print jobs
waiting - not on our installed printer - but on Microsoft Image Writer. These print
jobs were terminated and all is back to normal.

Spoolsv.exe is taking 100% cpu and I don't have anything in any print spool. Norton
Anti-virus shows nothing. Can end process in Task Manager, but restart revives problem.
Any suggestions?

Because I have Norton Antivirus set to do a system scan every Friday night I happened
to notice that SPOOLSV.EXE is utilizing nearly 100% CPU in the morning on Saturday.
This it the only time it happens, so I simply stop the process in the SERVICES window
and life is good. I'm not sure why Norton Antivirus triggers it during the scanning
process as I haven't been able to find anything on the Symantec site relating to
this.

Do you also have Norton scheduled to prepare some type of report which it unsuccessfully
sends to the spooler? Check the status of all printing devices after this happens
to see if some type of job is waiting. This device may not be your printer. Also,
do you also have some other action scheduled which is unrelated to your Norton virus
scan? You might try changing the night of your scan to see if something else is
causing the problem.

There are no reports other than the one on-screen indicating my system if virus free.
I'll schedule the scan for a different night and see if that makes a difference.
It hasn't been that big of a deal so I didn't even think of the obvious. Thanks for

that it's just one more weird thing to add to the list regarding Norton Antivirus.

I've had the same problem and it started when I updated those 5 critical updates
for XP a couple days ago (July 13, 2004). The stuff waiting to be printed was complete
crap that I did not ask to be printed. I deleted everything off the print queues
for all printers, but 20-30 minutes later it came back. This has plagued several
people I know and it all started with these updates. I also agree with a previous
posting that mentions it can happen after I run a Norton/Symantec scan. One person
I know fixed the problem by deleting the guest account on XP. I've managed to stop
it by unchecking a suspicious blank program in the msconfig startup. New virus or
obnoxious defect in XP/Norton?
Any other info on this?

For some people, if your Cable or DSL provider has a poorly set up network, other
people using the same service in your area can inadvertently (or purposefully technically)
send documents to YOUR printer which is usually automatically set up as a shared
resource in home networks. To fix this, 1) complain to your service provider, 2)go
to printers and set your printer to NOT SHARED.

Ok, spoolsv.exe keeps trying to access the network. I don't have Microsoft Office
or any kind of printer installed. Where would I find the files that are ready to
be spooled and why would spoolsv.exe keep trying to access the internet? I've scanned
my system with Nortons, Ad-Aware 6.0, Spybot 1.3 and Spywareblaster 3.2. Everything
comes up clean but spoolsv.exe tries to connect to the internet at startup, or at
least it did until I installed the ZoneAlarm firewall.

I too have the exact same situation, with the only difference being that the spoolsv.exe
program doesn't fire up until I try to start NeverWinter Nights, at which point Zone
Alarm politely asks if I would like to allow it access to the internet. The interesting
thing I've noticed is that the IP address it is trying to dial to is my router's
address.
I've scanned with Norton, Panda, Adaware, and Spybot and all is clean.
So why is this program being so uppity all of a sudden?

I had this issue on a 2k box and it was because the person had efax installed and
it setup a default printer. Every time they opened a document, the document was trying
to figure out how to use the printer causing spoolsv.exe to go to 100%. After changing
the default printer it no longer had that issue.

Definately not got a trojan either, as I'm very careful about stuff like that.
Not running at 100% CPU, but I suppose every bit of power you can keep in reserve
is useful.

Hello
I have had that spoolsv.exe problem for a week now and though I have no files waiting
to be printed, the spoolsv starts randomly and each time I get a message from norton
telling methere is a W32 Gaobot virus in that file. I have performed about a dozen
complete scans with different antivirus programs, incuding specific fix tools from
Symantec, and they either don't find that virus or when they do, it comes back within
the next few hours. Amazingly, Norton is the one who warns me about it and at the
same time, when i scan that file, it says there are no infections...?????

So if you stop the print spooler in services under Admin tools it just starts up
again? What file is the virus in? Can you manually delete the file? Also if you know
what your doing in the registry you can look for that file name and delete anything
that involves that file if its not important.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Make sure you have either a back up or a restore point before you do any of this
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The way I got mine to work is stop the spool service, then go to Windows Explorer,
C drive (where windows is installed), system32, spool, then deleted everything there
that it would let me, then opened regedit and and looked for the name of my printer
and deleted eveything for that also. then rebooted, when it came up tried checked
to see if i had any problems which i didn't then intalled my printer all went well
no problems since.
Also i didn't have any viruses either, thats probably another problem.

THanks for all who posted their experience. I have been haunted by the spoosv eating
CPU time for quite some time. Initially I suspected some virus as I see network
traffic to my router all the time when spoolsv is running. It turned out that I
have a PDF "printer," (that is, you can send a MS .doc to this PDF "printer" and
generate a .pdf file) and there were 5 jobs in that queue!!! Problem solved after
deleting the 5 zombie jobs.
Thanks all again.

spoolsv.exe wants access to the internet

Jerry, I don't see an answer to your question, and I have the same one. Today, ZoneAlarm
tells me that spoolsv.exe wants access to the internet, destination IP: 63.240.76.4.
Why would a print spooler need to go out to the internet? Seems suspicious to me.
Not sure about the IP either. Node name is NS6.attbi.com. Maybe it has to do with
my ISP (Comcast, formerly AT&T Broadband) and they're checking up on me. I guess
I'll deny access and see how it goes. Also, did a search of spoolsv.exe on my pc.
Found 4, all off of the Windows directory (running XP) and scanned them all with
Norton Antivirus. No viruses found.

Wow, thanks so much, everyone! This same thing had me taking my new Notebook PC
back to Best Buy thinking my DVD drive was defective. They looked at all the processes
running, but failed to see that Spoolsv.exe was taking 99%. When I finally realized
that, it sent me here. My print jobs (4) were in the MS Office Document Image Writer
queue.

Hi, Thank you for your recommendation. My image writer was the problem. Once I deleted

I think that the printer "Microsoft Office Document Image Writer" uses the intrenet
to send printing capabilities over the internet. Go to: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP010771031033.aspx
to read up on it. It is very informative. Also you can actually resolve the IP
address to a host name by using the ping -a utility in your command prompt window.
That is if the ICMP service on your network is not blocked.

Thanks, I solved my problem by just deleting this damn unusefull "Office Document
Image Writer" (that nobody seems to be needing anyhow...) and now my CPU usage dropped
from 100% spoolsrv to almost 0 - in other words: I have my PC back again...
Better than just deleting a pending document in Office Document Image Writer's print
queue, imho...

AMD Thunderbird, XP Pro SP2, 1GB ram. I just encountered a similar problem after
installing a Lexmark Z515 printer. A job hung in the spool and could not be deleted.
I visited Lexmark site and was instructed to enable bi-directional printing. Same,
CPU still at 99%. Removed printer software following LExmark instructions. Same thing.
Re-booted, same. Re-installed printer, same. Removed printer again, same. Re-booted,
same. Removed all printers, same. This computer is 2 1/2 yrs old and never a problem
before. I use AdAware spyware detection and AVG virus and Zone Alarm. None indicate
a spyware or virus problem or instrusion. I fired off a complaint to Lexmark and
will post their response. Until then, I pop up Task Manager and kill the process
until I need to print again! Major pain!! Any ideas out there??

I had this same problem with my Lexmark X125 for the last month or so. I tried everything

Yesterday I uninstalled the printer software (again), rebooted, uninstalled the Microsoft
KB887742 update, rebooted, reinstalled my printer software, and everything seems
to be working again ... I've been printing for two days now without a problem.
Not sure if this will help anyone, but after the headache I've had with it, I HAD
to pass it along.

Ok. Here is what I found wrong with my system. I had Adobe Distiller as a printer.
While trying to print to the Lexmark, a print job got hung in the print queue because
"Enable bidirectional support" was not checked in Printer Properties under the Ports
tab for the Lexmark printer. When I uninstalled my Lexmark printer, the hung print
job was transfered to Adobe Distiller! Who th' hell would have thought to look there!
Anyway, I did, I found it, I deleted it from the queue, removed all printers, including
Distiller, re-booted and re-installed my Lexmark and Distiller, re-booted again and
all is fine down here in la-la land.

The Fix...
Ok, there is some good (and bad) info on these posts.
This problem is due to a 'Trojan Horse' virus that will probably not show-up when
you do a scan.
However, you do not want to simply delete or disable the spoolsv.exe as you will
not be able to use your printer without this process. Also, if you have already
deleted it trying a quick fix you will need to go to your recycle bin and restore
the process.
Here is what you do, in two steps:
Start=>Run=>regedit
Edit=>Find=>backdoor.ciadoor.b.html
when this item is found, highlight it by single click and hit the delete key, ok
(yes remove the bugger).
F3, continue to search the regedit but only one occurance should be found.
close all=>reboot
Now that you are back and the trojan is cleared out of you registry you will need
to clean out your print and image ques.
I am using XP, but get to your printer list however...
Start=>Control Panel=>Printers and other Hardware=>View Installed Printers or Fax
Printers
double click on each printer or fax and highlight & delete and documents that may
be waiting in the que.
You might want to be try rebooting once again, but this is not really necessary.
Now you should be fine and the problem should be solved.
You can verify this by right clicking your bottom task bar and selecting 'Task Manager'.
Look at the middle Performance tab and the CPU utilization should no longer be at
or near 100%.

Had similar problem with Windows Task manager showing regular (every 0.5sec) use
by spoolsv. Tried some of the virus cleaning options mentioned but to no avail.
Finally ran REGMON.EXE which showed that Spoolsv was trying to use an old printer
(Xerox C55)on the network. Deleted the network ports ( just the ones referring the
old machine) using File > Server Properties. (Note that the printer itself had already
been deleted ages ago but the ports remained). Rebooted and no more 100% usage.

In 2000 the spooler file exists in C:\winnt\system32\spool\printers. In XP it should
be c:\windows\system32\spool\printers. If there is anything there, stop the spooler
service and whack the files. To see if the Microsoft Office Document Imagewriter
is there go to start>>settings>>printers. If it's there whack it--but only after
you have deleted any spooled jobs (this sometimes causes a hang).

No such directory.
Closest is C:\windows\system32\ then no 'printers' folder.
or if I try:
C:\windows\system\ no 'printers' folder. Just on called NLS
and " If it's there whack it" Sorry, don't understand. it what? Delete any files
found in that directory?
IN more research, here's what I think my problem is from. I have a work PC. It is
set up by our all powerfull and knowledgable techs. It has a Corporate version of
Norton that expects to retrive updates on a LAN (I'm not on the expected LAN, it
is a stand alone at home) it is looking every aprox 3 min for an update. Norton site
admits the version (v.7.60. something ) I have has a problem and locks up while doing
that. My solution is to drag the box back to work and have them update Norton. The
LAN people have latitude on how often it checks. They did not have to select every
200 seconds or so. I used filemon to see the activity and pinned to to Norton then
found the info on their site.
Again solution is to get my Norton anti-virus updated.

I have a pending job in a printer queue, but this printer doesn´t exist any more.
I cannot remove the printer because there is a pending job, and I cannot also delete
this pending job. It keeps in the "Eliminating" state, but never ends. And when I
restart the PC it is again in "Printing" status ...
How can I remove this printer ? Any suggestions ?

i've read this entire thread and haven't been able to solve my problem...my lexmark
x75 seems to work fine some times, test pages and word docs come out no problem,
but whenever i try to print cd covers (mediaface 4.0), only 1 in 30 will work, and
this after several reboots and reconfigs...the other 29 times, the progress box appears,
shows 0 %, and stays there, while spoolsv.exe jumps from 1-2 % to 97-99 % usage of
my CPU...after waiting an hour at 0 % progress, i cancel the print job, but it doesn't
disappear from the print queue, so i can't print anything else and must restart (i
encounter this last problem with word and pdf. docs as well)...i've done virus scans,
tried regedit, tried stopping spoolsv.exe in admin. tools (sometimes it stops, sometimes
it won't stop, sometimes it won't restart, and regardless, i can't print anything
without it anyways), and i don't have any other printers installed (i.e. no office
writer, as i'm running xp home edition and don't have office installed)...i'm about
one week away from chucking this piece of shit printer out the window, so if anyone
wants to save me a few hundred bucks, it would be most appreciated.

Thanks for the tip. I was suffering the same problem, i.e. spoolsv.exe utilising
97% of the CPU. I also had no jobs in the print queue for my laserjet printer but
when I checked the MS Image Writer queue, I found the culprits. Cleared the queue
and now everything's back to normal. Thanks heaps!!

I have the same problem with Jerry. I did NOT install any printer, so it is IMPOSSIBLE
to find Microsoft Image Writer. I've read through all articles in this website, and
no one answered the problem I have. People keep saying deleting queues under microsoft
image writer, but this is not my case. Finally, I solved the problem by looking at
the following website: http://torque.oncloud8.com/archives/000384.html
In my case, after I deleted two files 00003.SPL and 00003.SHD under C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS,
the CPU usage of spoolsv.exe goes down to 0%.
This may not answer Jerry or Todd's problem, but at least it gives solution to those
who have spoolsv.exe problem but not install any printer. Hope it helps.

I tried all the suggestions above but nothing worked.
The problem only started a couple of weeks ago for me - after I downloaded a windows
update (win2k) so I'm pretty sure that caused it.
I tried to uninstall some updates to find the culprit, but windows died and I had
to use the windows CD to repair windows.
It seems like only M$ Office programs cause this problem (notepad was fine) so I
downloaded version 2 of Open Office and now I can print word docs from Open Office
(right click the word doc, then open with Open Office). I don't know why, it just
works.

I, too, have a problem where it looks like spoolsv is showing regular, every 0.4
sec. I am showing 2% usage but what is interesting is that the memory used is going
up as I sit here. What is that all about? I noticed a problem while in Word trying
to write an essay - I get a pause. When I type the computer is pausing so as to not
put any letters down and I have seen the same problem in new emails. It looks like
the margin bar keeps popping up when the pause happens also. I am blaming it on
the spool but - (throwing hands up) I don't know!! If anyone has seen this...please
let me know - it is driving me nutty. I can't type without having to back track and
correct what letters were missed during the pauses. I followed JJGs advice and stopped
the printer service, etc. etc. and it worked in that my memory usage went from 15,000
down to 3,000 - but...it is back up to 5 thousand as I sit here. (grumble, grumble)

SOLVED it. See...that is all it takes, write it down - and ask someone. Shazam,
the solution comes to me! "clapping". What happened is - if I go into Control -
admin tools - services - and stop the printer spooler system. The pause stops completely.
So I reset the spooler (by right clicking on print spooler) and then properties
- and I changed it from doing it automatically...to manually. It seems to have worked.

When Zone Alarm started asking to allow spoolsv.exe to access the internet, I went
to annoyances.org where I found instructions to look at Start,Settings, Printers
and faxes. To my amazement I found that I had a printer installed called PDFConverter.
It was set as default printer. I looked up PDFConverter and found that it is a program
that costs $30.00. I don't know how it got on my computer. I changed the default
printer back to my HP 4L laserjet and now spoolsv.exe doesn't ask Zone Alarm for
permission to go on the internet anymore.

new, less than a day old, has nothing whatsoever under the printers or fax in control
panel, has nothing in the printer folder in system32, no print tasks waiting on any
other computer on my network, used trend micro virus scan, mcafee, spybot, ad-aware,
system is clean. One other slightly unrelated detail is that it seems that its always
using about 30% of my computers CPU when im doing nothing, if its not all due to
the spoolsv.exe (which it often is) its due to csrss.exe

Here is my problem, same as above, spoolsv.exe running and increasing in size constantly.
This FIXED the problem in XP Pro:
go into control panel and select printers.
choose each individual printer driver and turn off spooling for that
printer (most likely the MS Imagewriter).
IT'S THAT SIMPLE!
Spoolsv.exe will still be running but will stop misbehaving.

Thanks Winger, I've been having no end of trouble with this spoolsv and it turns
out you're right - bloody Norton was to blame; in this case Norton Internet Security
2006 suite running on XP SP2. My symptoms were; any time I opened a print dialog
(even if I didn't print anything) the CPU maxed out 100% and I had to kill the spoolsv.exe
to stop it. Disabling all the Norton Internet Security services did the trick.
Thinking of uninstalling it altogether as I've had nothing but weird issues since
putting it on.

re: Do you have a 20-40% CPU problem and have an NVIDIA graphics card?
Sunday, July 2, 2006 at 3:56 pm Posted by Swidge
(1 messages posted)
If you are experiencing a 20-40% drain with spoolsv.exe involved and are using an
NVIDIA graphics card this may well solve your problem. I know it's long but it may
be worth it and solved the same problem for me.
- I had the exact same problem that DUstin described (see below). My CPU
usage was between 30-40% whilst running idle. spoolsv.exe was taking about 20-30%.
Csrss.exe was also running high for no apparent reason. My printer spool was empty,
and my virus checks had come up negative. I also have a brand new dual core machine.
- However I have now solved the problem. I found that the problem actually
lay in an NVidia graphics card driver, and this was somehow affecting these other
unrelated processes. If you have a process called nvsvc.exe in your task manager
and especially if it is showing any CPU activity then this may well be the cause
of your problem, as it was for me.
- A way to definitively check if this is the source of the drain is to right-click
on the 'My Computer' icon and select 'manage' from the drop down list.
- Open 'Services and Applications' on the bottom of the left hand list.
then click on 'Services'.
A list of services that begin when you start your computer is displayed.
- Look for 'NVIDIA Display Driver Service'.
Double click on this and you are presented with anoher window displaying the service's
properties.
- Near the bottom of the 'General' tab you should find a section entitled
'Service status:'. It should say 'started'.
Now simply click on the 'Stop' button. (Note this is completely reversable if you
are worried.)
- This will stop the service. Once it has finished stopping the service,
it'll probably take a few seconds and will briefly display a progress bar, open the
task manager and your CPU usage problem should be gone. Mine was.
- If this did not solve your problem, then click on the 'Start' button and
the service will start again and I'm sorry that this did not solve your problem.
- However, if this did solve your problem, then this shows that there is
a problem with part of your NVIDIA driver.
- The best move is to download a new driver. Unfortunately I can't help
you much there unless your machine was a Dell. If it was, you should be able to find
an NVIDIA driver package appropriate to your graphics card available to download
on their website. I did this and installed the new drivers. This ended my problem.
- If your machine was not a Dell, then you should be able to find a driver
package either on the NVIDIA website or on the website of your machine's manufacturer.
Installing these driver packages should sove your problem, but I have kept the driver
installer in case the problem returns, but it has been working fine for over a week
now, I'm just being cautious.
- A temporary solution would be to disable the service from starting with
your computer by using the drop down menu directly above the 'service status' section
of the service properties winow. This will solve your problem but will not fix the
problem with the NVIDIA driver. I did this for a couple of days and didn't notice
any difference in my graphics card's perforance so I'm not entirely sure what this
service spends it's time doing. However the method I've described above solved my
problem completely.
- If this solved you problem then I'm glad to have helped, if not then
I'm sorry I wasted your time and good luck finding a solution to your particular
problem.

The Nvidia card causes problems with the print spooler, no doubt. Not sure why or
which cards specifically.
But the major problem with the spooler is unprinted documents.

Thank you thank you thank you -- I had this problem today. You've reached two years
into the future to solve this problem for me and I'm ever so grateful.
Microsoft Office Document Image Writer is evil. Pure evil. There was a pdf file
in it queue. As soon as I deleted it the problem was GONE. 0% usage in nanoseconds.
Note that the Document Image Writer is not my printer, I have no idea what it is
for, actually, but somehow or other a document got in there and was gumming up my
whole system.
Check your printers in your control panel. I'm guessing that the Document Image
Writer is part of XP so it is there whether you know it or not.
Good luck!

it is still showing 100% CPU usage. I try every tip that is mention in this forum
and my problem is still not resolved. The funny thing is that when I go to the Printers
& Fax folder, all the printers icon are flashing and I notices that at the bottom
status bar, it kept flashing saying "Finding items...". I was able to bring down
the CPU usage by stopping and restarting the Printer Spool from Control Panel ->Admin
Tools->Services. This works but when I begin using MS Word or try to print, spoolsv.exe
goes back up to 100%. Any suggestion or idea how to fix this problem? Thanks.

Go to control panel, printers and faxes and all your installed printers will be there.
I had a print job in the microsoft image writer queue which caused my cpu to sit
at 100%. When i ended the spoolsv.exe in task manager my CPU plummeted to 0-2% as
it should be.
My system was 100% clean, i have Zonealarm security suite and if you know how to
use it keeps your computer clean.
I deleted the print job from the image writer and i had task manager loaded and the
box in the systray went from fully green to empty immediately.
Thanks to you guys for identifying the problem. I had no idea that something as trivial
as that could spike a system so badly.
Thanks again.

office document image writer. Dleteing the job quickly resolved my problem. You can
access this by start->control panel -> Printers & other hardwares -> printers and

Right clicking on it will give you option to delete the pending job.

re: spoolsv.exe CPU usage 100% Duron

I looked through here & didn't see this fix (but I admit I could have overlooked
it).
I had a problem on a client's pc that the SPOOLSV.EXE process was taking 100% of
the CPU. The job was printing to the "Microsoft Office Document Image Writer".
The particular client needed this job so I could not simply delete the problem job
(something w/their accounting software would not allow them to recreate this print
job). What I wound up doing is taking an HP LaserJet 4 & connecting it to the pc's
LPT1 port. Then, I changed the Document Image Writer to use the LPT1 port & applied
the change. I then opened the print queue & right-clicked on the print job & selected
"Restart". The job printed right out on the HPLJ4. Afterward, I changed the printers
properties back to it's original port.
Hope this info helps others.

It is a "printer" in printers & faxes.

Swidge,
I had almost identical conditions to yourself and also identified NVidia as the problem.
Only difference was that the process was called nvsvc32.exe - not sure if that's
significant.

spoolsv.exe consumes 99% of the cpu causing the computer to become very very slow
(crashed).
1. No backdoor.ciadoor.html was found in registry.
2. No files in c:\winnt\system32\spool\printers were found
3. Ad-Aware removed some spyware but still problem persists
4. Can't see if print jobs are pending since i cannot open Printer&Faxes when spoolsv.exe
is running on 99% cpu usage.
I can only kill it from task manager but then nothing is displayed since the spool
service is stopped.
5. recreating the spoolsv.exe file after deleting it doesn't work
6. SP2 was been reinstalled
I believe there must be a pending job in queue but how can I check that when spoolsv
and Printer & Faxes can never work together???
damn! microsoft should do something about that...too many people have this problem
for soooo long as I can see...similar problem 2 years ago in Win2K meant reinstallation
and this is where I am heading to if I don't get a proper answer...

It's been a while since I had this problem, so I'm not sure if this was covered...
What solved it in the end for me was:
http://torque.oncloud8.com/archives/000384.html
Which, among other references, (including Microsoft) indicates the spool directory
to be:
C:\windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS
If you see files in there, then they are likely in your print queue... And you could
try deleting them.
Of course... If you read enough replies here and over there... You'll find that different
things solved it for different people... So there's no single fix for everyone.
Hope that thelps.
Cheers

One of my clients has a tablet pc and his spoolsv keeps hitting 100% when he tries
to save a document as a pdf using CUTEpdf. I'm able to stop the service, delete
the files from the C:\Windows\System32\Spool\Printers directory, restart the service
and get him going again, but it'll just happen again when he uses CUTEpdf. No one
else has any problem using CUTEpdf, tons of people in our company use this program.
Does anyone have any suggestions? (There are no phantom print jobs in any of the
printer queues as is mentioned by so many in this thread).
Thanks,

The major problem for this is that there is print job queing to be print so it cause
all the cpu usage to run. Mainly cause by documents converter or viewer such as Adobe
and more.
"Windows XP" I got it fixed by just go to the control panel. Then open the printers
and faxes. U will see how many printer and faxes currently install in your com. Then
u can see numbers documents queing right beside the printer icon name. So just cancel
the print job and it is done.
There is no removal for this to happen so you have to bare with it.

My spoolsv.exe was running at about 26% and your problem led me to solving mine.
I had tried changing the printers to print directly to the printer but this had
no effect. Then after reading this, I looked at the services and noticed a service
running for an Epson POS printer I had been experimenting with. I stopped this service
and changed it to manual. The spoolsv.exe problem disappeared. Thanks.

Had the same problem, spoolsv.exe hogging 96% of CPU.
After checking that no print jobs pending in Printers folder:
1. Right click on My Computer on your Desktop.
2. Click Manage.
3. Click Services and Applications.
4. Click Services.
5. Find Print Spooler.
6. Right Click on Print Spooler.
7. Click Stop. Don't know if it makes a difference, but wait a few seconds or more.
8. Click Start.
9. Check your Task Manager spoolsv.exe
should be back to 00.
Hope this helps.

The problem I'm having is when I end the spoolsv.ese process, because it is consuming
100% of my CPU, I dont have access to my print queues to look for jobs queued up
in the Image Writer. If I start the print spooler service again, my computer is
not repsonsive to the extent that I cant bring up my printers either.

i experienced the SPOOLSV.EXE problem and it was trying to access internet all time.
My case is totally not occured from the queuing printing job, as i checked all printer

in the windows task manager (ctrl+alt+del) in the processes, there is TWO same program
running, which is spoolsv.exe from SYSTEM which most of the people here talking about,
and another will be SPOOLSV.EXE, under the owner's user name. THAT IS A TROJAN HORSE!
I was trying to remove another trojan horse so called regscan.exe which also trouble
my CPU usage, so i got a software which also removed this SPOOLSV.EXE.... hope this
may help someone here.... here is the website u can download the program and free
use for 14days. http://www.superadblocker.com/R/REGSCAN.EXE-5591.html

I had a similar problem with a 'SerialNumberJob' stuck in a print queue for a printer
that was installed to LPT1 while a different printer was actually connected to LPT1.
The system started REALLY crawling, and the job couldn't be deleted, and the printer
couldn't be deleted.
Everything came back to normal when the LPT1 device was unplugged. Suddenly the
printer's one job deleted, the printer deleted, and the system was running smooth
again.

I Believe that if you have ended the spoolsv process it will come up with nothing.
You have to access it while the file is still active. It's a lengthy process. Hope

Ok so that how I finally fixed the problem!
My situation:
-----------------
Computer was working (WinXP Pro SP2) fine till 1 nice day I had 2 move it 2 another
location. I unplugged all cables including the printer (Canon PIXMA IP3000, USB cable)
& after I moved it I set everything up again. 1 important thing I should mention
is I cant remember if I really turned it off or if it was in hibernating status when
I put it off the socket (just in case that matters).
When I turned it on again I faced the same situation like almost every1 here: System
started, then even before all programs were loaded in the tray (Norton AV 2006 &
some Widcomm bluetooth software) everything got sooooo slooooooow that even opening
the task manager required a waiting of an hour. Then in task manager I also saw this
sweet little proggy running which we all here love so much meanwhile, spoolsv.exe,
eating up 97%-100% of my CPU. When I was killing it it was trying 2 come back but
after enough kills (3-4 times right on the head) finally it was absolutely dead &
the computers performance was ok again but now I when I opened "printers & faxes"
2 check the printing queue the folder was freakin empty, as expected.
The above situation didnt change even after I also connected the printer & tried
it on every single USB, just 2 b sure.
I tried everything that is told in this (& other) forum(s) but 1st I couldnt open
the "printers & faxes" folder without having 2 kill the spoolsv.exe & 2ndly there
werent any files in windows\system32\spool\printers 2 delete.
So what do ya do in such a situation? Yep - you get pissed off.
How I fixed the problem (while pissed off):
----------------------------------------------------
I was almost thinking 2 format the system & in a last attempt 2 save it I started
2 uninstall some programs I was using frequently 4 text editing etc. (& which I therefore
used frequently 2 print documents):
1 - Uninstalled the bluetooth software. Not really a text editor but still, it was
my very 1st suspect since the system seemed 2 freeze while starting. Needless 2 say:
No success.
2 - Uninstalled Nokia PCSuite. Also not a text editor but it was just a good opportunity
2 get rid of this 1 too since it caused some trouble in the past as well & I was
hating it. No success.
3 - Uninstalled Adobe Acrobat (has "PdfMaker" which I use a lot 2 create pdf files
& probably I used it also (together with MS Word) b4 I switched off / set the PC
2 hibernate just b4 its transportation). While waiting the system 2 restart I was
even ready 2 uninstall MS Office as my suspect No3 but then, hey, windows started,
problem was gone! Everything were fast again, spoolsv.exe opened also but runned
(& runs till today) with almost 00% CPU & "printers & faxes" could also open finally
but most important, I had my printer icons back! So nice 2 see them in there again
after 2 weeks, being there close together in the upper left corner of the window
& watching so innocent & silent at me, I almost cried :~-D
Of course I also printed something 2 test the printer & everything worked fine.
So I think if there r no files in windows\system32\spool\printers maybe 1 should
think what suspect progs he was working with when the problem 1st occured & if nothing
else works even try 2 uninstall them 1 by 1! I know thats an old hat but hey, its
the only method that worked 4 me!
Good luck 2 everyone & keep smiling!!

spoolsv.exe hogging 99% of cpu - the fix
I came into lab to find the printer printing strange ASCII characters, one line per
page, and a basically inoperably slow PC. Checking Task Manager, I found the culprit
- one spoolsv.exe at 99% cpu which I killed. About 30 seconds later, the cpu was
once again clogged by a revived app. Here's the fix. First, get some breathing room
- go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and stop the Print Spooler.
Turn off the printer. Now go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS and delete the
files there. I found '00020.SHD' and '00020.SPL'. Now turn your printer back on and
restart the service. Check task manager, spoolsv.exe should be at 00%. Whew!
Semi-update
I'm glad that this post has been of use to you. It drove me crazy too. In my particular
case the problems started occuring again after a couple days. This happend because
the 'bad' spooler files were coming from another computer on the network. Once that
person gave up printing that file, the madness stopped. If you are on your own, chances
are it is just a corrupt print file that needs to be cleared out.
BTW, if you would like to contribute, one way to do it is to make a link to this
page using the keyword 'spoolsv.exe'. Spread the love!

Under certain circumstances I am still facing this problem.
I have an XP machine connected to linksys print server (which is connected to a
HP printer) back to back. I am adding network printer on IPP port 631.
In one particular IPAddress (192.168.1.1) and port 631 combination, spoolsv.exe hangs.
I have done all that is mentioned i.e. deteled files in spool\PRINTERS directory,
installed all printer drivers, modified registries as indicated on Microsoft website,
even deleted all the printer ports and added them again.
Am totally baffled with the problem. Maybe at some time this IP and port combination
turned bad but there must be some way to get it back.

Greetings, I did not have any printer jobs that were pending and still had this
problem. I solved it by looking at my services running and found that "nvsvc32.exe"
(Nvidia assistant it said) was running, but consuming only 0.5% or so. When I stopped
this service, it stopped the spooler file from taking up my CPU. I set this to manual
start and I'm good to go. Been struggling with this for a while and it's nice to
see it gone. If you are having a similar problem, I'm betting that there are other
services that are not necessary that could affect this as well. Try pecking away
at the running services and see if they affect it... Good Luck! K

I've got a similar problem on my XP Pro running HP Omnibook nx6100 laptop.
I have a HP8550DN printer on my network, and last weekend this laptop decided that
the printer "wasn't there" anymore. I could see the printer's webpage, the management
software on the laptop was quite happy working with the printer.
I ran a reg clean, just in case there was a problem there. I deleted every printer,
and attempted to re-install the driver.
It happily installed all of the other printers on machines on our network. But now,
when I try to install the HP8550, it just appears to freeze. The spoolsrv process
is running at 90+%, the CPU fan has gone into overdrive. If I kill the process, the
installation of the printer suddenly appears to be complete - would I like it to
be my default printer? I click yes, the next, and up pops an error. IE: it didn't
install it.
I've run sfc /scannow with no problems reported.
I've tried all of the "published" fixes - deleting temporary spool files, etc..
I still can't get this blasted printer re-installed on this laptop.
Any ideas?
Rob.

I found that if you stop the spoolsv.exe process and go into the spool folder, (C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS)
delete every thing in that folder and restart spoolsv.exe. That should solve the
issue.

I had the same problem with my NVidia GeForce 6800 video card driver, namely nvsvc32.exe.
The problem started after I upgraded the driver to version 84.30. I stopped the
NVidia Service Support program (nvsvc32.exe) and cpu utilization dropped to 1%.
Apparently, nvsvc32.exe also caused unrelated processes to run amok namely, "csrss.exe"
at 40%+.

Firstly I find it hilarious that I'm replying to a thread started in 2004 and this
issue is still in the wild!
I came in to work today with the same problem, one of my CPU's running flat out,
spotted spoolsv.exe running hot for the past 63.5 hours!
Killed it, but it came back on. I've tried the batch file described here, but it
didn't work.. there is nothing in my windows\system32\spool\printers folder at all
(incl protected files etc).
I can't get to my Printer list any more as explorer won't open unless i kill the
spoolsv.exe, then it loads with a blank list of printers...
I have both Image Writer and Adobe DPF writer installed so it must be one of these
causing the issue I presume.. argh!
Meanwhile i've disabled the Print Spooler service, so I won't be able to print any
more!

Heh. 2 days ago I started getting the same problems. I just updated to IE 8, so I
thought that was the reason. I was trying to troubleshoot remotely every time and
nothing worked. 100% CPU on spoolsv.exe and only killing it helped.
Well, now that I can see the computer in front of me, the problem is clear. The USB
cable is unplugged. Windows, however, seems very confused by the fact.
Good luck with your problems. Hope they're fixed just as easily ;)

I have the spoolsv.exe issue as well. Interestingly I do not have a printer installed,
nor have I ever had a printer installed. I did have CutePDF installed. Here is what
did not work:
* I checked windows/system32/spools/printers - it was empty.
* I checked the registry for the ciadoor worm listed above - it was not there.
* I checked Control Panel -> Printers and Faxes to see if Microsoft Office Image
Writer was the issue - there were no printers listed.
* I turned off the Print Spooler service in the Administrative Tools panel, and that
seemed to stop it, but I like using CutePDF, so I tried to mess around with other
things first.
* I uninstalled CutePDF (interestingly, it required me to have the print spooler
activated in order to uninstall it). This did not fix the problem - spoolsv.exe returned
every time I shut it down and climbed to the top of the list immediately. This tells
me that CutePDF is not the issue.
* The only other program I have that is capable of writing to PDF is OpenOffice 3.0,
which is not even open, let alone printing anything.
A "practical fix" is just to turn off the print spooler, then turn it back on whenever
you want to use it, but...
Isn't there some other way?

The problem with the spoolsv file I had was that ANY program which might use the
Distiller file had to be removed (Photoshop, Acrobat, etc) and the computer restarted
to insure that the problem would go away. I have reinstalled the Adobe software
now, and have no problems at this time. The problem seems to be caused by the distiller
itself, but all Adobe files use it, and so, I suspect, do any other programs. The
programs do not need to be running for the error to occur.
