Can it even be done? None of the 3rd party applications have been able to do it -
I'm reduced to setting my desktop colour to the same as a corner of my wallpaper
that my icons are hiding in

If you have tried everything already mentioned and still cannot get your icons to
have transparent you may want to try this.
Change following reg keys to a value of 0
User Key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer]
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer]
Value Name: ForceActiveDesktopOn
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = default, 1 = enabled)
This is what did it for me. Something, I don’t know what was changing this value
to 1 on my system. Once I set this to 0 I had my drop shadows back.

I had the same problems. By chance I found that just having the drop shadow option
set is not sufficient. If it's already set you first have to unset it and apply
the change. Then reset it and apply the change again. That worked for me.
If that still doesn't solve the problem you can also go to Control panel> user accounts
and create a new account. That should have transparent text by default. Configure
the new account to look like the old one then delete the old one.

When the text under the icons on your desktop are not transparent, there are two
things to check. First open System from the Control Panel, select the Advanced tab,
and press the Settings button under the Performance header. Make sure that on the
Visual Effects tab, the option Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop is
selected.
If this still doesn't do the trick, right-click the desktop, point to Arrange Icons
By and make sure that Lock Web Items on Desktop is un-checked.

I can't believe I didn't realize "Lock Web Items" was what I needed to check.

The option Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop was selected in my system
but it would not have the expected effect because I had Active desktop content. When
I removed a web page that I had on my desktop, then the icon labels got transparent.
Thanks Bill, now I understand what "logical" means for Microsoft: If a web page is
sitting ontop of your desktop wallpaper, why bother to have transparent icon labels
anyway ;-)

In my system also I've got the same problem. But now I managed to resolve it. Just
following the steps below:
Step1: Right click My Computer and choose Properties. Go to Advanced Tab and click
on Settings button under Performance frame and deselect the Use drop shadows for
icon labels on the desktop checkbox and then click OK two times.
Step 2: Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc
Step 3: Go to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components
-> Windows Explorer. Double click on Turn on Classic Shell and select Enabled option.
Click Apply and OK. Close the Policy Editor.
Step 4: Follow the Step 1 but select the checkbox and click OK.
Step 5: Now go to Desktop to enjoy the Drop-Shadow effect.

Hi all,
I'm having the same issue with the desktop icon shadows. Unfortunately, I've tried
all the suggestions listed in this forum, from changing registry entry values to
changing the display properties, yet I still have the shadows. I also checked my
system with the HSRemove tool successfully, but it also didn't help. Something else
that I found odd was that in my 'My Pictures" folder I no longer have the 'Set As
Desktop Background' option when I right-click any image.
Any suggestions?
Thanx,
Thommy

I am having this problem too. I have had it before and fixed it but don't remember
how. The drop shadow option is checked, the lock web objects option is unchecked.
The "My Current Home Page" item is unchecked. I tried the registry hack. I am on
XP Home so I don't have gpedit.msc. My icons still have the colored recangle instead
of being transparent.
This problem started for me yesterday. I was trying out some different wallpapers,
when I set a local HTML file as the background. Then the icons lost transparency
because Active Desktop was activated. I then changed it back to an image. The icons
did not become transparent again.
I know my current wallpaper is a .jpg file (http://kjun.org/hue_1500.jpg,
beautiful work of art), but I think somehow Active Desktop did not turn off when
I switched back to the .jpg.
I have noticed that whenever I shut down or restart, that the screen changes to the
default windows xp screen as normal, then for a split second the entire screen becomes
the desktop default color, then goes back to the xp screen. At first, it was showing
the file "Firefox Wallpaper.bmp" but I deleted it so it now shows the desktop color.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Try this: Do a search for the file "Desktop.htt" on your C drive. Right click any
you find and click properties. If any are set to Read Only, uncheck this setting
and click OK.

According to this
post only .bmp files will work with the drop shadow effect.
Using IrfanView, you can change your wallpaper
and it will automatically convert it to .bmp format and not have to worry about this
again.
It it under Options > Set as Wallpaper.

This is the tricky part. I had Spyware on my comp wich cused my desktop to have this
problem.
Here's where you have to go in your registry editior:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop
Also here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
I deleted the ActiveDesktop registry because this was caused from spyware. I deleted
these registry files, and reinstalled IE from the Win XP disc, and I got my transparancies
back.

Real Fix for this Problem!
Thursday, September 21, 2006 at 1:24 pm Posted by JrHacker
(1 messages posted)
This is for the times when none of the above work.
Go to Start Menu -> Run and type "regedit" (exclude quotes).
Click [HKEY_CURRENT_USER].
Click Software.
Click Microsoft.
Click Windows.
Click CurrentVersion.
Click Policies.
Delete the folder labeled "System" (under Policies). Or, if you prefer to play it
safe (i.e. you don't trust me), just rename it to "_System" (excluding quotes).
That may take care of the problem. If it does, you'll know that you had/have a malicious
program called "SpySheriff" installed on your computer.
Email me if you have any questions, or if I can be of further assistance (or if this
helped you!). Email: botslayer (-at-) gmail (-dot-) com
Hope this helps... this has frustrated me in the past and I could never find an answer.

nt it!!...then just delete/remove the original adminstrator with the shadowed icons,it
will ask you if youll want to save programs and stuff, so save anything you need
to keep and take it to your new login , and install the programs you need to use.
...good luck
Believe me Ive tried every thing for a fix and to no avail!!this will give you a
fresh start...good luck

Hi all
I found a fix to this and seen this so here it is its so simple.
Right click on your desktop. Click on "Arrange Icons By" and make sure "Lock Web
Items on Desktop" is disabled.

The solution to this BUG (Microsoft, please take note of the CAPITALISED
and bold word) is quite simple when you know it (but purest hell
while you don't)...
right-click your desktop, choose properties, click the desktop tab, push the 'customize
desktop' button and untick or tick any of the 'desktop icons'.
Click Ok twice and presto! Windows succumbs to the power of the mouse!
Lame Microsoft, lame as usual...

I've tried everything here and nothing works. I tried the gpedit idea, but I do
not have Windows Explorer listed under Windows Components! I only have Windows Media
listed there, so it was a dead end. Arranging icons is likewise a deadend. I've
converted the background tile to a BMP and that was a deadend. Any other ideas?
The idea of going into settings and clicking on an icon while in the dialog box doesn't
work because as soon as the OK is hit in the dialog box, the icon highlighting goes
away - so I don't see how that was ever intended to work. I don't see Windows succumbing
to the mouse...

Dude,
I meant you need to untick or tick one of the checkboxes in that screen, not the
icons themselves.
If it does not work for you maybe its because I use Windows Server 2003 not XP -
perhaps XP is even more stricken by the moronic plague i.e. redmond syndrome
Good luck!

I tried everything too. I realised it might also be in the monitor settings. Now
I switched off my unused secondary monitor and I got them back!!

This happened to me (along with a slew of other problems) when I plugged my machine
into a projector at a conference . . . dumb; I know better! Anyway, this fix worked
perfectly . . . stupid, stupid Windows . . .

There is something else you can try after all the other suggestions.
Start>Control Panel>Display>Desktop>Desktop Customization>Web>Under web page, uncheck
all the boxes and click ok
