Windows XP loading slow, or not at all

Over the past couple of months, the startup sequence once in XP has been really slow.
The only icon programs that load are Norton Anti-Virus and Firewall. I'm pretty anal
about things bogging down my system, so most of the apps are essentials and needed,
nothing extra really loads up.
But sometimes Anti-Virus will just load disabled, and the startup sequence will hault
there. Sometimes it continues after awhile, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I can
still use other programs like IE and Outlook, sometimes I can't. If I try to go into
other apps, the comp might freeze up if the sequence doesn't finish. Then again,
at times the sequence finishes while loading other apps.
It's just something that's really annoying and I find myself constantly restarting
the computer manually until windows loads correctly.
I've updated all my drives, freed disk space, I have plenty of memory and run a 1800+
processor. I've virus scan with the latest updates, checked for spyware, etc. I have
no idea what the problem is and it hasn't always done this.
Any suggestions?

Have you run defrag to defrag the MFT and how much RAM do you have, 512Mb plus? Have
you run DocMemory to see if all of the RAM is OK and are all your fans running properly
in a dust free cabinet?
Have you run an on-line anti-virus scan and how about uninstalling and re-installing
your anti-virus/firewall program(s)
Are you using SpyBot S&D, AdAware and SpywareBlaster as we ALL need to do?
Mac
Reference
Free MS Windows Update CD
