Deep hatred of all that is MS, installing linix as alternative

Xp has shit on me for the last time. ive been contumplating installing mandrake linix on my hardrive for a couple weeks now. if i install it on a hardrive with 36 gigs of space will it: A. Screw with my boot B. erase parts of programs C. overwrite some of the windows partition. can anyone answer some of my questions and put a rest to my most likely, un-warented fears and paranoia?

I have no clue about "linix", but if you mean Linux,

A. Screw with my boot Depends. Are you planning on installing the bootloader? Do you use an NTFS partition for Windows?

B. erase parts of programs C. overwrite some of the windows partition. Depends. Do you plan to answer Yes to the question about formatting your drives? Do you plan to manually partition? Do you have any free space left on the drive? The Linux installer must create at least two partitions: an EXT2 or EXT3 partition for /, and a swap partition.

Judging by your question, I don't think linux is the OS that will solve your problem, or quell your hatred.

Nicely put. If he can't make Windows do what he wants, I doubt he'll get Linux working properly... Those who use Linux be prepared to deal with file permissions, compiling their own software from the source code, editing configuration files by hand, and using bash shell commands...

A. Linux is harder to learn and configure than Windows, even with Mandrake. If it will be your first time with linux, use redhat. B. Since linux is harder to learn/install/configure....if you haven't had any experience with it....don't expect a calming effect after windows...

jazz is a state of mind...

Yep, all that fun stuff ;) I seem to remember this guy, isn't he the one who wanted to stick it to the man and override admin settings on a computer at work?

Not hard at all, nope. Not for you or me at least. But as I said, if he can't manage Windows, how is he going to manage Linux.

Trying Linux is something everyone should do. I never loved Windows so much untill after using Linux. In fact my criticism of Microsoft products has softened a lot. I found my $140.00 copies of XP Pro a much better deal than the free Linux Distro's I tried.

If he were a whiz-kid, he should be able to customize Windows to look and work as much like Linux as he wants... Take my KillTT program, for example. Similar programming to that can change any aspect of the OS.

What makes you think you'll like Linux any better? I looked at it and thought it looked too complicated for me.

All depends on the distro and your skill level I suppose... :)

Personally, I use XP every day so I'm more comfortable with it. Plus I only do Windows programming right now. (I've not had time to look into Linux programming yet--too many different API's for graphical applications.)

Linux has a future for the IT guys, but home users will never have the dedication to learn it, unless something real revolutionary happens to it. Like some large Microsoft type Company developing ease of use into the software, and charging a fee to use it.:)

ok guys, i said that out of jest, and yes i realize i spelt linux wrong like an ass. however, ive been picking up on linux programing from a co-worker and the learning has been going smoothly, by the way, the MAN in question? is a 23 year old brand new IT guy that really doesnt know much about windows, or programming for that matter, hell he gets all his technical suport for just about everything from this site. as for switching OS, ive just grown tired of XP after reading multiple books on how to tweak it, ad how it really runs, including "windows XP annoyances." A JSP programmer friend of mine from High-School is the one that turned me on to linux, i hope that this clears things up and makes it so you guys dont think im just some impetiouse youth who's mommy just got him a brand new dell, ill remember in the future to make my messages more "profesional". thanks

I have read your original Post. The very first one.It wasn't XP that done it,it was the Admin. which did not let you do what you felt like with someone else's Machine.Dont' destroy your Future with your hatred.Life is too short for that.Hope you find your way. W.

Get yourself another hard drive,if you know how to enter your bio`s screen you can disable what ever hard drive that you dont want to boot,or boot first.Or you can make yourself a bootable floppie or RW.

I have to agree. As a greenie user who has only been working with computers for about
four years but now runs a computer repair business, I must say that if it were not
for the Windows operating systems I would not be where I am now, wherever that may
be...

Windows ME still pisses me off on occasion, but it is likely my inexperience with
the system. Just moved to XP myself and began doing repairs on it for others and
I must say I DO like it.

I wish someone would tell me why it hangs at "Windows is shutting down", however...

This is a good site. Glad I found it.
