Question about 'Enabling or Disabling Automatic Windows Update'
Sunday, June 27, 2004 at 2:03 pm

I cannot enable or disable the Automatic Windows Update on my eMachines W2646 because everything is grayed out. I have no idea why or what to do. I use a dial-up to access the internet. I also cannot get Live Updates from Norton/Symantec antivirus or access their websites. I don't know if these problems are related or not. I got this pc on 6/22/04 from a friend who ordered it from TigerDirect.com.

An EMachine from Tiger Direct. The worst of all worlds. Contact them for an RMA. It's not too late.

Auto update is unavailable on my pc per microsoft.com's security check. I am the administrator/owner of this pc. The Auto Update is grayed out when I right click on MyCompute r> Properties > Automatic Updates Tab on System Properties. When I go to Control Panel (Classic View) > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Services > Auto Updates is not in the list of Services (Local) so I am unable to make any changes. I have an eMachines W2646 -2.60 GHz Intel Celuron Processor- that I got on 6/22/2004 with Windows XP Home Edition SP1 already loaded, I guess that is called the OEM. Auto Updates is supposed to be included as part of SP1. How can I get Auto Updates on my pc? PLEASE, PLEASE HELP ME ... YOU CAN EMAIL ME AT Buffylou@usadatanet.net with the solution. Thank you. Will this link get me the necessary download for auto updates? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=A7AA96E4-6E41-4F54-972C-AE66A4E4BF6C&displaylang=en

No. This link will not get me the file for auto updates. >http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=A7AA96E4-6E41-4F54-972C-AE66A4E4BF6C&displaylang=en Norton AntiVirus 2004 Professional said it was a malicious and corrupt file and did not allow it to d/l.

Just remove [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate] key REGEDIT4 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate] And it should be normal again

Thanks, but, in my case #1 I do not have that key in my registry and #2 For some reason, after following Scott Finnie’s instructions in his newsletter (http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/60.htm) on installing windows update v.5.0 my automatic update feature for windows XP started working. I do not know if there is some feature of this windows update v.5.0 that fixed my windows update or not. It did start working after this download. I also received SP2 for Windows XP on 08/25/2004 and have had no problems with it. Per Scott Finnie "TIP: Installing Windows Update v.5.0 If it's true that anyone who has Windows Update version 5.0 installed, and who has Automatic Updates turned on, will receive XP SP2 on Tuesday is true — and you really want the new code — all you really need is access to Windows Update 5.0. While there is freely downloadable beta code, there's an easier way: For more experienced users only, please. There have been some reports of dire issues with Windows Update v.5.0, but I remain more or less unconcerned about it. For more information on Windows Update v.5.0, check out Fred Langa's article on InformationWeek (http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=22104207). To install Windows Update v.5.0 right now, follow these steps. Launch this URL: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ When prompted to accept an update to Windows Update, accept it. You should also see a message reading "Get the latest Windows Update software" and an "Install Now" button. Click the button. That will install the new v.5.0 code on your system, and poof, you're running version 5.0 of Windows Update."
