Question about 'How do I get my mouse to work in DOS programs?'

I have a question about How
do I get my mouse to work in DOS programs?:
Using Windows XP, have a DOS-based program at work, a CAD program, that is required
for usage in our cutting machines and their formatting. Problem is, the middle button,
which is required by the CAD program, will not function in the CAD program running
on WinXP. It runs under Win98SE properly, as well as Win95 and DOS, but not WinXP.

set compatibility mode for that program to windows 98 environment and see if that
helps.

You made an operating system change, you may have to make a software change. Did
you check if there were any XP patches available for the cad program? Which program/type
of machine tools are you using?

You also have the choice of adding a dual boot system to use Windows 98 for your
CAD program. That may be the surest way to have compatability.

On all accounts, tried except for the final one... dual boot. Dual boot is out of
the question I am afraid because we jump in an out of programs, it isn't cost-effective
for us to have to reboot every time.

If you're interested in long term cost effectivity, you deed a different game plan.
How many computers are there in your system? How many acturally need to run CAD?
Mac or Apple might be more benefitial. Having someone write an interface might also
work out.
Have you tried installing a mouse driver dedicated to DOS?

I have attempted to install a driver for DOS, but to no avail.
With regards to the computer issue of numbers, we have three computers that require
the running of the CAD. Currently, the major problem, that I am up against, is the
fact that this is DOS-based. There is a Windows version of the CAD software, but
I am up against the constraints of the Accountants of the Company as well. The company
who manufactures the CAD software, Lisec Software, will sell us the Windows version,
for $11,000. Because we are running two Lisec cutting tables, we *must* use their
CAD in order to allow the tables to cut the shapes made. Since the Accountants will
not willingly fork out the $11,000 for the new version at this time, I am forced
to attempt to make work the version I have. Unfortunately, as can be identified,
the difficulty is the issue of the middle button in this matter. We have contacted
Lisec in an effort to find out how to make the middle button work, we had two answers:
1. Find an XP driver that will emulate DOS and allow the third button to function.
2. Upgrade our software for $11,000
As you might be able to tell, the Accountants' response is to make work what we have...

Not enviable position. Have you talked to MS? They may have a secret fix. I don't
suppose the accountants are likely to spring for 3 Win98 computers either. If I run
into anything, I'll let you know.
