Question about 'How do get the taskbar and desktop back if Explorer crashes'

I have a question about How do get the taskbar and desktop back if Explorer crashes:

I was trying (I should emphasize "trying") to fix a friend's computer which had been neglected for months. I found and removed two viruses (StartPage-DU (I think) and another virus, I can not remember) using mcafee virusscan, stinger, adaware and spybot. Only now, when XP starts normally, as soon as XP loads (icons and all) everything disappears -- taskbar, icons, etc. I try ctrl-alt-del and look at the processes list, and either one of two things happens -- I see explorer.exe appearing and disappearing repeatedly, or I can not even look at the ctrl-alt-del screen -- as soon as I press ctrl-alt-del, that screen itself flashes and disappears. I can start XP in safe mode, and I can't find any viruses. Also when the computer starts up now, it seems to go directly into the BIOS setup page automatically before booting, more and more often to the point where I have to reboot several times until I can start XP. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance Matt

Matt sounds like you have a bios virus, i got round this by jumpering the reset factory settings, although it can be done on most modern pc's by pressing F10 in the bios menu, BUT! this does not always clear the problem, most boards have a 2 pin jumper you need to turn the pc off, unplug it and short the two jumpers out for 5 seconds, hope this helps

Thanks a lot, that worked :) I didn't have a jumper, so I emailed my board manufacturer, and I had to short out two solder points -- archaic motherboard i guess. But thanks again for your help.

Well now I'm confused. The problem is back -- when windows starts up, after a while all the icons and taskbar disappear -- etc etc etc. The computer is virus-free and the bios was reset -- any ideas on what I should try now? thanks again

Hi Again, could be too many programs running in your startup folder, check your system memory cpu usage, look at processors running and if any are high, check them out on internet to see if they should be running, could be a number of problems, if it was mine i would start from scratch and clear the drive and do a fresh install, pain in bum i know but sometimes its the last option....

My friend has the same problem and for now I can only help him by phone, On my first try, I saw that this is not really a virus but surely a process that can block explorer.exe, because if you start windows in the safe mode it'll work correctly but we don't want to use windows in the safe mode so I make him try the restore system program, that does not help, and now I must investigate more, so look at your process stop everything that should not be there see the list and after that try to start "new task" explorer.exe if it work you should try to find wich process block explorer.exe, and if this work this mean that this is not a virus but a software that is running so you should be able to find it and delete it manually.
