Probably being blocked by firewall, do you have a third party firewall on both pc's
or just xp's inbuilt?
Can you ping both computers?
Please reply.

i use ZoneAlarm and have set up a trusted ip range to cover all the drives and the ip address of the laptop...but when i checked to make sure ZoneAlarm range was set on the laptop, i found i had forgotten to set the trusted range. Once i did that, everything was fine. Thanks for your probbing on what should have been obvious.
