Question about 'Force Explorer to Start With the Folder You Want'

There is one thing that is really annoying me! Is there anyway to have the folders
bar instead of the task pane when browsing standard folders.

E.g, If I double click "my documents" on the desktop (or type c:\windows in 'run',
or double click a folder), it will launch the folder with the folders bar on the
left hand side instead of tasks pane.

I can get rid of the tasks pane already but I am currently unable to force windows
to launch the explorer bar without either making a shortcut (which is unviable due
to fact that i open numerous different folders and i don't want a shortcut to each
one!), or by constantly going to view>explorer bar>folders ???

Why couldn't MS make a Ctrl shortcut to the folders bar??

Doesn't getting your view etc. set the way you want it in Win Explorer, and then in its Folder Options (under the Tools menu), hitting the Apply to All Folders button work?

Unfortunately not! It remembers everything apart from the folders bar :(

Same problem here, and my great configuration of folder views got lost with just a click at a button. But I'm used to doing stuff at least 77 times (since I'm a Windows users so...) But I would really like to see some smart guy figure out how to really get explorer on its knees and obey my needs, and to post the solution here. Anyone? My needs: Start in a certain folder on a certain drive AND displaying the folders to the left. Cheers, Fredrik

Man I have spent hours and hours trying to get explorer to behave. I have been using Norton NT tools since 95 and now that I have "upgraded?) to eXtreme Pain Norton File Mangager is full of bugs but there are still some great features that work. You would think after ALL this time MS could at least get explorer to work like a real file manager. Instead it acts more like a cheesy web browser. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I wish I could contribute a solution....

Cool This worked for me for MyComputer. But in my case I have 2 links to eplorer.exe, 1 to open it in C and the other to open it directly in C\ProgramFiles. The 2 links work fine, opening WindowsExplorer indeed where I want it ..... BUT in Tasks View. Is there any trick, maybe on the link command line, to force Folders View? Thanks, Nick.

I have the same annoyance for shortcuts I created on my desktop. I just figured out
a way to solve it within Windows XP...

After you create your shortcut, go into the Properties settings for that shorcut.
In the "Target" field, type in the following prior to the target of your shortcut:

C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /e,

For example, if a shortcut you created has a Target of

"C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\My Documents\My Pictures",

your revised Target would be

C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /e,"C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\My Documents\My Pictures"

I picked the customizing settings for Windows Explorers at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q307856.

I hope this helps!

Steve

Change target for Windows explorer in its properties to the following:

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,/e,c:\

Adjust as necessary

Thanks guys. This worked fine. Starting to have a little respect for old man Gates, now that he got this working for us. Sorry for late reply, did not realize you guys answered. NickGuy
