Microsoft TUN Miniport Adapter... What is it?
Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at 1:39 pm Posted by edesider
(26 messages posted)
Does anybody here knows what Microsoft TUN miniport adapter is? I have two in my
network adapters under Device Manager. Both are enabled, and while the first one
is started, the second cannot be started so it has the yellow "!" on it. It cannot
be uninstalled saying it's required for XP at bootime.
I have searched Microsoft, Google, Forums, but found no answers. I removed all networking
components in XP, but it's still there. Help, I wanna get rid of it.
regards,
James

I have searched Microsoft, Google, Forums, but found no answers.
What keywords did you use when you searched? Try Microsoft TUN Miniport Adapter.
That's how I would find the definition ;)

Sorry I can't help you more James. I don't have any experience with the adapter
you mentioned. The only information I could provide would be as a result of a search
with Google. I noticed several threads regarding that adapter and also that it could
be either a part of an advanced networking pack added on to XP, the result of a past
MS hotfix, or part of Windows 2003 .net server. Maybe someone else that has had
the same problem will post and help you out...
From a thread at Experts Exchange, via Google: "Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter
(comes with Microsoft Windows 2003 .Net Server), a network driver that provides a
tunnel with a File API interface, through which a user-mode Windows application or
service can interact with the network stack as if the application were a network
interface."

Firstly I'm a chinese, so I will try to express the solution precisely.
I've in the troble as you today after i check PtoP and Gateway find program(I'm using
the Chinese edition so I'm afraid I dont't the name of them in English)in the Windows
setup Program in add&remove Program in control pannel, then I got a new conflicted
device which name is "Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter #2".Then after a lot of attempt,I
check all the components of them(Web Service),which result in a new conflicted device
which is named"#3".Woh...
Then I got the solution, firstly remove the advanced network pack fully,I got the
#3 gone,then disable the #2,reinstall the pack again,then enable the adapter,then
re-unistall it.That's what I got,all conflicted device disappear,just with Microsoft
Tun Miniport Adapter which is in good condition.
So that is maybe caused by check and uncheck some items in web service for more than
one tiome. If all things are right, there should be only one adapter, but becase of
some reason only damn Microsoft know, some tag thst should be make did not work, so
more than one adapter are enabled at the same time, which makes the troble.
Maybe you will find some problem in reading my english,I'm so sorry. But I actually
solve it.if you have some problems with it ,Please contact me use the email:Wondrous_0@Yahoo.com.cn.
We can see Microsoft is always use their hotfixs to make troble that need more hotfixs.

Hello,
I read your message here. I originally had one conflict which was "Microsoft Tun
Miniport Adaptor #2". I followed your instructions and then I got another conflict
"Microsoft Tun Miniport Adaptor #3". I did exactly what your instructions said,
but the conflicts won't go away. I'm stuck, and can't use my network port. I have
a HP Pavilion ZT1180, and any help you can give me would be appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Proven solution for deleting "Microsoft Tun
Miniport Adapter #2"
run regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Cont
rol\Class\
browse through those names like
{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318}
* might not be the same as mine, but...
go through the 0000, 0001, ... and notice the
right panel for "DriverDesc" matches "Microsoft
Tun Miniport Adapter",
the second one is the "Microsoft Tun Miniport
Adapter #2"
delete the whole folder of it and then u can
uninstall "Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter #2" in
your device manager.
have fun

Greetings Dundas,
First, thanks much for responding to my posting. But please note that the regedit
will not allow to delete these registry folders. I've tried everything I know how
to do, but it won't let me delete them. Do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Johnny

i have a tun miniport adapter showing up and i think it's supposed to. unfortunately
it shows disabled and won't start. i've checked the processes and they are automagic.
i think that some service in the startup tray is trying to use it, exceeding the
network stack and randomly locking my machine.
how can i get the gateway to ENABLE ?

HI,
Tun miniport adapter remove goto desktop,
Start, Run. In run box type:
IVP6 uninstall
enter.
That seems to kill it.

Simply go into the Device Manager - Network adapters and Disable the Microsoft Tun
Miniport Adapter. You might have to reset some devices affected by this adapter.

Today I achieved something I didn't even have on my mind when I started the day.
I did a routine defrag & registry backup on one of my XP laptops;
so when I found the tun miniport fix published by ZAZULA @ Tech Support Forums,
I was ready to massively edit the registry. Unfortunately the fix was not a success.
The two tun miniport entries with error code 10 simply changed names to WAN ... with
error codes 10,
so I restored the registry. Then I found a posting by Leroy @ Techarena.in, who claimed
to have fixed the error code 10 message but could not uninstall the tun miniport.
Leroy's posting gave me the idea to install a different driver on the tun miniport
entries.
I have/use USB link cable, which is also called USB miniport.
I had no expectations but also had no other possible solutions.
I ignored the warning not to install the driver, then ignored the warning that the
driver was not digitally signed,
then ignored the warning(s) that the devices were deactivated (code 22) or would
not start (code 10).
I then tried to uninstall the former tun miniport entry which was now called Hi-Speed
USB ... and,
instead of XP telling me the device could not be uninstalled because the device might
be necessary for startup,
XP UNISTALLED the entries! I've rebooted several times & used this method to uninstall/remove
the tun miniports
from all three of my XP laptops. The tun miniports have not mysteriously reappeared
either!

I have the same problem. I find the Microsoft TUN Miniport Adapter in the Root Directory.
I don't know how to get into the Root Directory, but will pursue that.
