LSA SHELL (export version) error?

I keep getting the 'send error report' box up with an error in LSA SHELL(export version).
I click 'dont send' and then the system shutdown in 60 seconds box appears and i
can do nothing but wait for shutdown! I have no idea what this is, its the second
or third time my computer has done this in the last 2 or so months, each time i have
formatted and re-installed windows to get rid of the problem.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.kieran.

Sounds like the sasser virus.
When the message first pops up, do not click on either choice presented. Click on
start>run. Type in shutdown -a. this will prevent the shutdown. Then go to www.symantec.com
and download the fixsasser file and run it.

This suggests you are not using a firewall and other safe computing practices (e.g.
you may be involved with P2P file sharing). Until you do, you will continue to have
problems with junk like this.

I have personally experienced this problem at least three times after doing fresh
installs of XP pro on two different laptops, and have found that it CAN be due to
something other than the W32.Sasser.Worm.
Of course, it is best to have both a firewall (try sygate personal firewall or zonealarm)
and antivirus installed before you go online to be safe. If you even suspect this
could be a worm, go to McAfee and get the "stinger" to scan for it and repair as
needed. Check out: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
However, if you get this error and have reason to believe that it is not the worm,
then try this- it works for me every time: Open up your network connections, and
right click on your Local Area Connection to set Properties. Under the Advanced tab,
check the box to enable the firewall. For some reason the error never happens again.
(Yes, I have updated antivirus, stinger, firewall, etc, and there is no "wormsign".

Amazingly, that did the job for me! I've run every virus scan I know and even
downloaded the sasser fix tool from symantec... but it wasn't found each time. Then
I tried this fix, and the problem has gone away! Thanks!
