Question about 'Stop Windows from Detecting Devices'

I have a question about Stop
Windows from Detecting Devices:
I bought a laptop with Windows XP and was using a thumb drive to save some files.
My computer totally locked up and I had to restart it - I figured that since it
was restarting, it wouldn't detect the device so I pulled it out before Windows started.
But now Windows XP always says that USB storage device is connected. I can still
use the USB port for other things and they basically work, but it still says that
the "USB Storage Device" is "ok" to be detached. I don't have access to the device
anymore so I can't plug it in and "remove the hardware." Any tips on how I can get
the remnants of that device out of my system would be awesome! Thank you for your
help.

Why not just uninstall the driver of the thumb drive from device manager

I didn't install a driver - I just used it like a floppy and put some info on it.
But Windows still detects it since I didn't use the "remove hardware" button before
taking it out. Oh yeah, I finally remembered the right name for the device - flash
drive.

Even thou you didn't install driver windows will automatically install it and
by default windows will hide installed driver when the device no longer exist...
To show all installed driver also show details tab of device properties,
Copy and paste all between below two red lines to notepad
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Environment]
"DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS"="1"
"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
File name : ShowHidden&Details.reg
Save as type : All files
Double click on ShowHidden&Details.reg to merge it to registry... then go to
Start -> Run -> type in : devmgmt.msc
Under view menu click on show hidden device then expand every key to find and uninstall
all
hidden device that look greyed out from device manager but
don't uninstall everything you find under "Sound, video,
and game controller"
Hope this helps...
