Effective Repair of Internet Explorer?

After a likely browser-hijack - a problem which is by now completely solved (the
computer is fully clean!) I cannot any longer activate my Windows XP Home, SP2-Internet
Explorer browser from the short-cut placed on the Desktop. Neither can the respective
"exe-file" in the File Manager open the IE. However, which seems very strange, I
can enter the IE when activating f.inst. any link to a webpage, sent to me by f.inst.
an e-mail. In all instances the browser-interface opens up only in a fraction of
a second and the closes down again.
I have numerous times been trying to uninstall IE amongst the Win's components, reboot,
and reinstall IE, but the problem persists. Moreover, the problem seems difficult
to handle because IE is part of also the new Win SP2, thus when I am trying to download
the IE SP1, I am logically given to understand that the program is already on my
computer. The same is the result when I try to redownload the Win SP2. Again the
initial Windows-scanning says that I already h a v e the SP2 on my computer and I
am not given a chance to redownload it. Furthermore I have also tried to run a "sfc
/scannow", but with the same negative result! Likewise I have tried the search-function
to find the "ie.inf file" in the Windows\inf folder in order to have it reinstalled
- no effect whatsoever...
Indeed I would be most grateful for any advice which could effectively solve the
problem of IE. Thanks, Oeksen37+

...Yap, thanks a lot for coming back - in fact I had already read the, I dare say,
time-consuming "bunch" of advices/articles from the respective MS-page (sorry, ought
to have informed about that in my thread!), however, they don't seem to refer to
exactely my problem (the non-functioning IE-Icon on the desktop!) - and, I must admit
that I would very much like to avoid a radical reinstallation of my otherwise well
functioning Windows XP , because you and I, and most others, know what happens if
you do that - you may possibly solve your problem in question but will most likely
get quite a few others/new and lose quite some settings etc....but thanks for your
willingness to help! Oeksen37+

Did you try deleting iexplore.exe in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache, then in C:\Program
Files\Internet Explorer? You'll definitely be asked for your XP CD...

Otter, thanks indeed for your coming back: Your very interesting suggestion has so
far not been tried out by me, however, I don't seem to be able to locate "iexplore.exe"
in the folders mentioned by you. So, I have made a search for the said file, which
can only be found in the following directories/folders:
C:\Programmer(My folder for that!!)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\iexplore.exe
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\9efd3e.....
Could it be so, that in reality I have not at all had the right file at the right
place and that is what have caused the problem? Would still be grateful for your
further advising me...Best regards, Oeksen37+

Try renaming them all and see what happens. If something blows up, you can always
rename them back... :-) BTW, you apparently have installed a Service Pack. Is this
slipstreamed into your CD now, or did you only get it through Windows Update or something?

...thanks Otter, feel that we are in fact narrowing in the problem...I'll try the
renaming and come back! The Win XP, SP2 came "down" from MS after the usual scanning
of my computer - re my recent threads, and for the same reasons I cannot have it
redownloaded - a new scanning will just disclose that it's already in place on my
computer, consequently it'll not offer a new download...Oeksen37+

Heh, did some serious experimenting. I was able to cause the exact same problem on
my machine. Try this:
Key: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main"
Name: "Start Page"
Type: String (REG_SZ)
When that value was not present, IE opened for a split-second--only long enough to
see the title bar--before closing again.

he...indeed very interesting - you understand much more about these things than I
do (being 67 years!). Does that mean that I'll have to add these sentences in my
registry? I wonder how I manage to do that....any advice? Oeksen 37+

Heh, OK, let's make it a bit simpler... Copy and paste the following lines into a
file ending in .reg and double-click to merge into the registry...
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Start Page"=""

...I am inside the Registry now. Following are my positions:
Startpage:
Type: Reg_SZ,
Data: http://www.msn.com (this page from time of browser Hijack!!)
Searchpage:
http://ie.search.msn.com
(also from time of Hijack of browser)
I would prefer a "Blank" opening page and no direct search function.
How shall I correct this - if any corrections needed?

uff...I realize that I am facing some problems! Where shall I "paste" that file,
and shall I only add a "dot" after the name of the file? and is it from that given
position that I shall double-click the file?? Sorry to bother you continiously....Oeksen37+

I am afraid that this "mission" is more than I can find out, when double-clicking
the pasted file from within Wordpad, I am getting the message-screen that this file
is not accepted in the registry - I think that I can better handle the Registry itself.
Shall I just add a line at a specific place and save it....re my info about my reg-positions
in previous thread....?

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main in the left
pane of regedit. Make sure the value named "Start Page" exists. If it does, then
that isn't the problem. Otherwise, go to Edit->New->String Value and name it "Start
Page"

..."StartPage" does exist with the values as mentioned in my previous threads...so,
it seems as if we have still not found out what is the damn problems - but you have
been extremely patient - thanks a lot...!

I can't remember--Has someone recommended going to Control Panel->Internet Options->Advanced
tab->Uncheck "Enable third-party browser extentions"

...an uncheck did not produce any change....let´s sleep upon it - you need some rest
now! Of course I could probably repair the situation by reinstalling/repairing Win
as such, but I must admit that I am very reluctant to go ahead with that for reasons
already mentioned in my previous threads....thanks again! Oeksen37+

Otter... you have been that much cooperative, friendly and helpful that I'll let
you know how I think I'll handle the problem in a situation where it's seems difficult
to solve it in a more radical way (the Icon-activation on the Desktop!):
By means of a URL-link, received in an e-mail from anybody, I click on the link,
and the IE-browser opens its interface on the respective webpage - the same interface
which cannot be opened by means of the IE-icon on the Desktop. On the appropriate
browser-line I choose a webpage which I prefer having as my standard webpage, copy
this page and paste it into the Win XP's "Run-line", then click on "OK" and use this
action as my way of activating the IE browser, from where I can then choose my web-searching
as I like. Of course I keep the line of my above standard page in the "Run" context
for use every time I want to open the browser. Please note, that the URL mentioned
cannot, for reasons that I don't understand, be pasted directly on the Desktop (why?).
Its definitely n o t the way I have preferred to open the IE-browser, but its better
than nothing.
Your attention is also drawn on the fact that when on a certain webpage in IE I go
choose "Internet Positions", I realize that always "http://www.msn.com" is set as
the start-page - so it has always been through the whole of the problem. I can change
it in favor of a "Blank page" or any other page of my choice, b u t when I come back
to this position again during my browsing, the MS-page is back "in command"! Still
I believe that my HD is by now clean for pests, bots etc., but I cannot rule out
that there is still some browser-hijack-tendences from the respective MS-page....allthough
I have had a lot of various software scanning my computer during the last couple
of weeks.
You might have already guessed it, Yes, I have shifted to use "Firefox" for my browsing
- what a change to the better! however, for consultation og f.inst. bank accounts
and that like, I'll have to use the IE, since these institutions are all "married"
with the IE-solution.
Should you or others have any comments/new suggestions they are always most welcome,
thanks, Oeksen37+

• Repair IE
To reinstall IE, or (re)download it from the M$ update site, edit HKLM\SOFTWARE\
Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
