NFTS or FAT32 with Win98 as OS n 2nd drive??

I have a PC with two hard drives. One running XP & the other just for storage. I have thought about putting Windows 98 on the second drive & using it for the OS (after using F8 as at boot up & telling bios to boot into that drive) as one or two of my apps don't work on XP. Both hard drives are NFTS. Will 98 work on an NFTC hard drive or will I need to convert it to FAT 32?

Win98 will not understand NTFS drives. Also, 98 will overwrite the MBR, so you should either back it up or be prepared to reinstall XP. Lastly, I don't think 98 likes being anywhere but the first hard drive, though it's been so long that I can't be sure of that.

You cannot convert from NTFS to FAT32 you can only convert from FAT32 to NTFS and that is not a good idea anyway. You definitely can't run '98 on an NTFS drive. Looks like you are into formatting and setting up a second Primary DOS drive, etc. on the second drive. Or it is an older or second hand machine for '98. Dual booting has to many problems.

Switching boot drives in your bios should work (if your bios and system architecture allows). As was mentioned though, 98 won't function on NTFS.

How much stored data are you talking about? If you have enough room on your XP drive, temporarily move the contents of your second drive there, while you fat32 format and install 98, then move the data back. There are many other options for dual booting (ghost drive 1, partition, install 98, restore XP, edit boot.ini, etc) both hardware (like NickLock) and software, and although it is possible to convert NTFS to fat32 with third party software, the success rate is low. Google for details, and whatever you do, start with a recovery plan other than system restore ;)
