Question about 'Choose Your Short Filenames'

I have a question about Choose Your Short Filenames:

After reading the discussion, I discovered that these solutions do not work under Windows XP. I then searched and found an application called setSFN, which sets the short filename to anything I want without touching the long filename...beautiful. However, I quickly thereafter discovered that it does not work on FAT volumes, which is what I need. So, my question becomes; how do I set the short filename independently from the long filename on FAT volumes under WinXP?

FAT doesn't appear to have support for a separate short name. I'm guessing it has just one name field, and if the name is too long, it is changed in a fixed way. SetFileShortName
