Printing one page of Outlook email message
Monday, November 29, 2004 at 7:32 pm Posted by Mike Kaiser

Let's say I have a 7 page incoming email message in Outlook, and I'd like to print
only the first page of the message . . .
It seems I have two choices within Outlook to print Page 1. I can print the entire
message and discard pages 2-7, or I can print only the Odd pages and discard pages
3, 5, and 7.
Why?

I use Outlook 2000 and it gives me the option to print any range of pages under the
Print command in the File menu. I must admit I have never used it as I never receive
e-mails over 2 pages - 7 pages is a hell of a long e-mail!!!

Thanks, Malcolm. I'm using Outlook 2003 and it doesn't give me that option. Did
they actually take a step backwards, or is there some option I haven't seen?
Actually, I was making up the example with 7 pages. I was really dealing with a
three page email, and only wanted to print page 1.
Can someone else weigh in on this? I'm confused that Malcolm has a different print
dialog than I do, and I'd like to have "his."
Thanks in advance.

It seems very odd to me that you don't have this option. I thought all the Office
suite of programs had this - mine certainly does (Outlook, Word, Excel etc..)
It's hard to imagine that it would be removed in Office 2003 - out of interest check
Word. It is also possible that your printer driver does not support this function
so could be worth checking the printer manufacturer's web site

There are several "sort of" work around this (!@#$?)problem:
1) Most people advise to copy and paste to Word and then print the selection you
want. I do not like that because the lay-out is ruined and you do not have the sender
and cc and/or bcc names.
2) Another (and in my option the better) option is to 'Edit the message' (first open
the message, then 'Edit' and 'Edit message'. Then delete all you do not want to print,
then print.
Answer 'No' when you are asked to save the changes after pressing 'Esc'.

Thanks, Rob. I've been using workaround #1, but I agree with you that #2 is better.
But what a horrible design, eh?

Yes, at home I use Netscape for e-mail and Firefox as browser, but at the office
I have to manage with the silly Microsoft programs.

Hi Mike, I have the same problem with Outlook 2003. I can see no way to limiting
printing to one page. Did you find a solution? John

No solution, but the workaround from Rob earlier in this thread is helpful. To quote

Thanks for feedback. I use 'forward' then delete all but page 1. Is MS aware of this
flaw? John

Good question. I have no idea--nor do I know how to find out. Let's hope so.
If anyone knows how to bring this to their attention, please have at it. It's stuff
like this that caused annoyances.org to come about in the first place.

I have also wondered abt this for a long time, and recently I found an acceptabel
way around it:
Convert the message to HTML (open the message, select Edit, Edit message then choose
Format menu and change to HTML). The you can print the page(s) you want. Also after
print, if you wish to keep message original, do not save the change! Tere you go!
Good luck to all! Hope MS will fix this silly small thing, that could save a few
trees in the forests I think!
