Dont use the /s key when formatting your disk. Just format your disk and the XP disk will format and create your SYS files when it finishes formatting. When you create your system disk when you format, Windows looks for the autoexec and config.sys files

Hi, you didn't say how you formatted your hard disk in order to reinstall XP. Did you use floppy disks or the XP CD? If you are using the CD, then two possibilities, one is that the CD is damaged or second one is that your CDrom has developed a fault. If both are ok, then depending on which CPU you have, if it is AMD, then either the CPU was overheated in the past, or the memory modules or the cache memory on the motherboard have developed a fault. Sorry, can't be more specific with regard to the hardware without more precise historical account of events. Hope this help. Regards and good luck.

This has happended to me recently on a drive that I haven't just formatted. One day I booted it up and got that message. The power unit has since 'blown up' and I've just replaced it. I installed another version of Windows on a different hard drive and booted up using that. The problem I now have is I want to copy the my documents folder from the old drive to the new drive but because my username had a password on it, it will not let me copy it. Any ideas? (on the both the config sys question and the file copying) Thanks Mule
