Question about 'Customize the Start Menu Button'

I have a question about Customize
the Start Menu Button:
Hi people,
I've been fooling with this for 2 1/2 hours now. I have Windows XP Professional.
I edited the Explorer.exe file in UltaEdit32 with no problem. I can't get it replaced.
I read so much on a bunch of sites I'm toasted. I just need simple directions to
replace/over write the file. I'm a rookie. Thanks.

Windows File Protection will dump the normal explorer.exe back in if you try to replace
it with a modified one.
One way around it would be to rename your altered version to something like explorer2.exe
and copy it into the windows folder. Then use regedit to navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and chage the 'shell' value from 'explorer.exe' to
'explorer2.exe'.

Hello again,
When you say use the "regedit" to navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon. I'm not familiar with this. Would you mind taking a few
minutes to tell me? Thanks.

Hi Critter,
I tried it and got a blue window saying there was a problem with the file. I got
back in and switched it though ctrl alt del/new task. scared the si*t out of me.
lol. Would that mean I did something wrong while editing the file? I swapped the
wort "start" for "BRIAN" every where I could. Until it said no string found for start.
I'm a bit confused. Would it help if I mailed someone the file? thanks.

Don't change the word 'start' everywhere it appears. Only change it in String Table/37/1033/line
578 .
More on playing with the start button here.
