I have lost all icons and start menu functions

I have lost all icons on my desktop and cannot access the start menu. I can run programs by hitting ctrl-alt-del and selecting the program through Task Manager, but cannot access anything through the desktop. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Tip: Run a free scan for common Windows errors ad

I fixed this on a HP by hitting F10 at boot and doing an HP restore. You could also try cmd=>sfc /scannow or do a repair from the XP CD.

My desktop is OK, but the little icons to use while I am in "My Documents" or "Outlook" have disappeared. I have "Start" and right now I have "Annoyances..." Things seem to work, I just have to go to my desktop to click on what I need. Thanks

It sounds like like the process for explorer (not internet explorer) is either not
loading, or is being shutdown somehow. I don't know if XP can even start up without
a functioning explorer.exe, but I know for sure that you can kill explorer after
booting to produce the effect that you (and some of those that responded) are complaining
about.

You can see what I mean on a functional XP machine:
(warning: read through before attempting)

Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Task Manager.

Click onto the Processes tab

Find and highlight "explorer.exe" in the list of processes (you might want to click
on "Image Name" at the top to list them in alphabetical order so as to find it more
easily).

Click "End Process", then "Yes" on the popup warning message.

You'll notice that the Start Menu, Taskbar, and desktop icons have disappeared, but
any programs you have previously loaded are still there.

To restore them select "File", "New Task(Run...)", then type "explorer" (without
the quotation marks), and hit enter. This will reload explorer.exe and your icons,
start menu, taskbar etc will reappear.

For those struggling with this issue it seems to me that one easy way to test this
would be to hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Task Manager, then select the Processes
tab and look to see if explorer.exe is there. If you can't find it, then that's
the cause of your problem. You could then try to load it manually as I instructed
above. If that doesn't work, it may be that the file itself has become corrupted
or deleted and you'll need to replace it somehow (via system repair or reinstallation
of the operating system etc.) I suppose it's also possible that some kind of virus
is preventing explorer.exe from loading, so it might behoove you to run an anti-virus
and adware/spyware scan before attempting anything drastic.

If this isn't related, then you have my condolences. ;_(

-Ben

I just got the problem a while ago, i dont know what caused it.. maybe its that link
i accidentaly clicked on yahoo messenger.. its a link to a .jpg, then the browser
says that i couldnt connect so i just ignored it, then sooner or later, i got my
icons very small, and i tried to restart windows, the icon restored to its normal
size but lost its icon image, i tried some stuffs and this is how i solved it..

right click on desktop > properties > appearance tab > effects > "Use Large Icons",
then i got my icon images back again but on large mode, do the same thing again but
uncheck the "Use Large Icons".. then OK..

Hope it solved your problem.. if not, there's always a way...

Hi, I am 14 years old and have had the same issue for about 4 months now and have been accessing programs thro Ctrl+Alt+Del. It has been a real pain because i can not do anything for there is no icons or start menu or anything at the bottom of the screen thats blue. Unfortunately i had left my computer on mute before the problem and could not hear a sound > Control Panel is impossible to access. However, i was able to fix that through Windows media player using some long twisted way. I can't do searches that are found on the start menu. I tried a system restore that didn't work and the explorer idea only made the bottom blue thing appear for a fraction of a second, much like many other programs that i try to open do and also in the processes there are two "IEXPLORER.EXE" I cannot right-click just on the desktop but can in windows of other programs. If there is any way for my computer to return to its original state please can someone help me!!

I do not belive I have found the actual fix for the problem, but I have gotten all my icons back. I attempted to open up my resourses for the computer. Add/Remove...Control Panel/System/Advanced/Settings/.... Turn off all but, the last and third to last. "Use common tasks in folders" and "Use visual styles on windows and buttons". Those two seem to keep windows XP at standard. Also goto Start/Run "msconfig" and disable most from "Services" and "Startup". The ones needed are up to what you do on the computer. (Graphics if you game)...now MSN and Yahoo or other chat programs, must be shutdown within the program, they will "Load on startup" when you load them the first time after shutting them off through "msconfig", they will load on startup. So the problem was resourses. You ran low and your computer pulls fetures of 98/ME/XP. It has done it since windows became an o/s.

I had a motherboard video feed which became unajustable and difficult to read. I installed a video card and plugged the minitor into it. I get "my computer" and Windows Explorer on the screen, but no icons and no taskbar. Typing "Ctrl/Esc" together doesn't work. How can I disable the "old" video feed and get my "Desktop" back? es

My problem is the the computer will not run with explore.exe running. I have to end that process in order to be able to use it at all. Then I can acsess everything I need through the task manager but I can't figure out why it won't work otherwise. Any ideas?

i had it happen to me and it was caused by a backdoor trojan virus. i downloaded lastest FREE version of AVG free anti-virus software and ran it and it found two trojans, one call trojan backdoor and some other one. after running a high priority scan, the program delete them from my system, i restarted the computer and EVERYTHING went back to normal operation.

Your machine sounds as though it is very sick. You say it will not load the boot disk? Do you mean it will not boot your Windows Installation CD? Have you checked the settings in the BIOS to allow it to boot the CD first, before it boots from the hard drive? Cheers. Spexx.

It will not let me in the BIOS, hitting any Key hangs it up , it won't load until i have quit hitting the key..i can't even restore it cuz i can't get into the setup to do it. No it won't Boot the Installation CD that came with it, will not load the Drivers CD either. This is a computer that was given to my Wifes aunt and they told me it just needed the Drivers installed, but that is all the Info i got from them. Thank you for responding.

Ok..Update I have managed to get the start menu up, accedentally by the way =] ...i was able to make a boot disk for windows NT and it let me load the start menu, but here is the thing now, everthing is loading to the left of my screen, and by that i mean out of sight to the left....i have to keep dragn my mouse over to the left and try to grab a file i have opened. Ah by the way the disk i made just loaded at start up right into my desktop as it's been doing but it did bring my start up back , it's a temp fix so to try and re-install the files i need. I did find out the the person who had it did delete files and wasn't sure if he may have deleted something important..yup right ;] Thanks again.

I have fixed my problem, it was two things..first the previous owner had deleted some of his personal files and deleted some files in the system folder..i told him next time just format the drive and re-install the OS. Anywho the seconed thing that didn't let the desktop load up all the way was hardware that was installed..once i removed it the computer loaded all the way up i even got the splash screen back. hardware was a graphics card. I installed the XP cd over the previous installation just to replace the files that were deleted and wha-la all done =] . Thank you for your time.

I had the exact same problem and fixed it after opening firefox from task manager. My exact problem came about after i played an mmo game that had a glitch and made my pc freeze.

On the restart i saw that i ve lost all communication with my desktop. No icons, no right click at the desktop,no windows toolbar and no start button. By searching the forums i came about a solution.I thought that if this wont work i will need to format and re-install windows. The solution worked and after i rebooted everything went back to normal.I was a bit hesitant on whether it will make the situation worse but it worked. The solution to this is the following: Bring up registry editor via the task manager (type regedit and Enter) There are 2 registry keys in the registry that are causing the problem. It affects the explorer.exe and iexplorer.exe files. This are the keys that need to be deleted... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplorer.exe Once these keys are deleted the desktop and internet explorer should come back to life. To be honest i run a modified windows xp pro version and the iexplorer.exe was not found cause i didnt install it in the first place, so i just deleted the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe After i erased the folder looking icon in Image File Execution Options i rebooted and everything got back to its normal state.I want to thank robbieart for providing the solution (he also got it from someone else but thats how the net works eheheh) It worked like a charm for me i hope it does the same for you.

I had the same problem. No start/Task bar but I did have a few Icons available. I had installed another graphic card giving me another monitor output, when this is done windows installs multiple monitor support. I only added the card for better resolution on my new monitor verses the on-board output. Anyway when this is done windows had a setting (option) in the display properties for one of the monitors that if checked it would extend my desk top to the other monitor, well I only have one monitor connected and it wasn't designated as the number 1 monitor. I unchecked the box "Extend my windows desktop to this monitor" and that fixed my problem. I don't know how it got that way because the only thing I did when it happened was opened the case and took out my CD and DVD re-right drives to get model numbers to update drivers. This setting can be found by right click an open area on the desktop then choose "Properties" then "Settings" tab then choose a monitor to view its' properties and remove the check box applicable "Extend my windows desktop to this monitor" only one of them will have it available with 2 monitor capability.

Thank you!!!! My daughter's computer had a worm that I got rid of but still had no desktop or start menu. I tried your suggestion and when I got to the end of the explorer.exe file I saw the file that had been infected so I nervously deleted the explorer exe. and rebooted to my surprise everything came back to normal. I've been working on this all day!!! Thank You So Much!!!!
