Try Control Panel/Regional and Language Options
or type
control intl.cpl
into the Run Dialog box
and set your location to be the UK.

If you change the Regional and Language settings to English UK, the £ will be there
as Shift + 3 and the $ will stay as it is. Some key symbols will change - the most
obvious being the \ character which then takes over the # from Shift + 3 and Shift
+ 2 which swaps characters with the old " key
However to use \ on your keyboard, all you have to do is use the Left Shift + Aly
keys which change between the keyboard languages on the fly. That's what I use in
the same situation as yourself.
Mapping standard keys may well run you into more problems both with current allocations
and other applications. You will probably find that you make more use of the old
$ than you think, with e-mail and international useage.
Hope that all makes sense?

IT MAKES PERFECT SENSE AND IT WOULD HELP ME USE THE POUND SIGN, BUT................
oops CAPS on...
it doesnt answer the question. i know how to find the pound sign and i am aware of
the slight differances between the keyboard layouts- i have been using it like that
for a while now (thanks any way ;) )
however, what i want, is to to ONLY asign the £ sign to a hot key and leave every
thing else intact.
where if anywhere would i be able to assign diferent charecters to a key?

that is simply not the case, this solution you are offering only tells the system
what symbols, currency, date, etc.. to use, it has no relevance what so ever on the
keys and keyboard layout.
thanks anyway for the williness to help

Well in that case - and your VERY definite requrement ;)
Try this link to get the '95 mapping tool.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/wutoys/w95kerneltoy/default.asp
According to a previous thread on the 2000 forum, this will also necesitate a disabling
of the XP file checking whereby on boot-up, the altered keyboard file is restored
to the 'correct' state.
Create a text file, call it disable_caps.reg
Following content:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,3a,00,00,00,00,00
Save it. Double-click it. Reboot.
Supposedly this accomplishes what you require - but .................
Good luck!

You could always just try ALT 0163 to generate the GBP sign.

Just open WORD > open INSERT > click on SYMBOLS > Choose CURRENCY SYMBOLS > click
on the POUND Sign > below click on Shortcut key > a window opens where you can assign
(create)your own shortcutkey.
Hope this is what you are asking for!!!
I had the similar problems, because I am German using the Euro sign very often and
my keyboard is american too.
