Installing XP from ms-dos (with no os installed)

Win98 startup disk doesn't work. The ms dos disk that you can make doesn't allow
for cd to work. I can't figure out how to install it.
Only way i've managed is to install 98, then install XP over top. But I don't want
to do that. I want to install XP with no other os there

he's speaking 'bout the xp upgrade cd, which is not bootable.
There's a way, but can't rem exactly.
Like booting to dos frm a boot floppy or any boot cd, and run "winnt32.exe in the
"i386" folder of xp cd using dos commands. Also, it may ask for verification and
you have to insert the win 98 cd.
DO a google search. I know people doing it.
BTW, u can download dootdisks or boot floppies for xp or 98. Just search and copy
/ burn the data to cd or floppy

"the xp upgrade cd, which is not bootable." Seems a lot of people disagree with you
on this: http://www.duxcw.com/faq/win/xp/clean.htm.

U r misunderstanding the "upgrade process" with an upgrade cd. With a bootable xp
cd, one can upgrade from a windows environment or can run setup after booting from
the cd. That option is not there when u purchase a "upgrade only" xp cd, which is
approx 200 bucks less than the real xp cd. Thats the diiference between the two types,
u pay more to install xp from a formatted HDD.
An "UPGRADE ONLY" version disk requires a windows environment to run.
Hope this clears.

No, you are misunderstanding my post.
"How can the Windows XP Upgrade be clean-installed? ... There are (at least)
four ways to clean-install the Windows XP UPGRADE... 2. Boot to the CD-ROM
drive,"
"According to Microsoft, Windows 2000 does not qualify for an upgrade to
the XP Home Edition... If the XP upgrade disk... However, if the computer
is set to boot from the XP CDROM"
"The Upgrade CD is bootable just as the Full Version disc is."

EMERGENCY BOOT DISK FREEWARE
Normally you change the boot sequence in the BIOS to get the computer to boot directly
from the XP CD. (Has it got SP2, btw?)
However you can avoid doing this by following this procedure:
If the machine has a floppy drive, download oldbios.exe , from the bottom of the
downloads page, to another computer's hard-drive, and make an OLDBIOS redirector
boot floppy.
http://ebcd.pcministry.com
Put a clean formatted floppy in the A: drive and double-click on the downloaded oldbios.exe
file. This will make the boot floppy for you.
When you get back to your own machine, put the floppy in the A: drive, start the
machine, and put your CD in the CD-ROM drive as the computer starts up.
If it does not direct you to the CD the first time, you might have to try again.
The OLDBIOS floppy works in most machines with a floppy drive and simply redirects
the boot process from the floppy, which is first in the boot process, to the CD-ROM
drive allowing the CD to run.
This way you don't have to enter the BIOS to change anything.

My first xp cd was upgrade disk, and I know. Just insert it, bios will not detect
and os will load. If its a formatted hdd, a blank screen will result. i HAD TO INSTALL
95 OR 98 TO RUN THE CD. Once the cd is run, u have two options, either to upgrade
or to do a clean install. remeber, this is from a windows environment, any windows
will run cd. If the running OS is not suitable for upgrading, then only clean install
is the choice. Once u select clean install, the cd will format the EXISTING WINDOWS
(it can be 2000 or even longhorn, it doesn't matter) and install xp. U r again misunderstanding
"running the cd" with "installing xp".
All upgrade only xp cd's have two choices, upgrade and clean install, but it will
not boot from a formatted hdd to do a clean install. (And that's the reason why M$
charges it less assuming u paid for another M$ OS.)

It SPECIFICALLY SAYS you can BOOT the CD to INSTALL the UPGRADE as a CLEAN
INSTALL. If YOU couldn't, then your computer was misconfigured.
