first install Tweak UI WinXPx => install Tweak UI for Win9x => goto Tweak UI in
Control Panel use "EXPLORER" tab => this worked on WinXPH after installing Service
Pack 2 => there is a download link for Tweak UI Win9x at http://www.systemsmedic.com/TweakUI.htm

Finaly found that creating 8 differents shortcuts on the desktop and removing "shortcut
to" everytime make winXP accept that you don't whant it anymore. holly sh*t ...
lost 2 hours to find out that stupide way of implementing it.

Argh!! I just want the stupid arrows to GO AWAY!

Someone in this forum recommended making 8 shortcuts and then removing them all?
I've looked at the TweakUI for XP and although I uncheked the "prefix "shortcut
to" onto new shortcuts"..it didn't do squat to get rid of the silly little arrows
on all the existing shortcuts. Older versions of TweakUI had an obvious "arrows
or no arrows" selection. Has anyone come up with a fast easy fix for this. I NEVER
want arrows. I know which are shortcuts adn which are originals and I hate the look
of the silly things. Thanks in advance

It's per user, so you need to log-off and log back on.

According to the website "Windows XP A to Z":
Open regedit.
Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile
you'll find "IsShortcut registry value." Delete it.
Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile
and delete the IsShortcut registry value.
Your system may have to be restarted.
Sometimes deactivating the arrow for *.LNK files might cause duplicate items in the
Explorer Context menu.
There is some contention on whether or not this method will crash the system. I tried
it on mine (Server 2003 R2) and it worked fine, but back up your registry (or set
a restore point, or make sure you've got a PE ready with an offline hive editor ready)
just in case.
Another suggested method (which I haven't tried) is to go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTInternetShortcut
and delete the IsShortcut registry value.

Download TweakUI for Windows XP from Here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
After you install it, start it (Start > All Programs >
Powertoys for Windows XP > Tweak UI). Click the plus
sign beside Explorer to expand it and click on Shortcut.
Then you can choose between the regular arrow, light
arrow, none, or a custom overlay on your shortcuts.
