After helping a couple friends with about:blank, I can say it is easier, and less
time consuming to reinstall Windows.

If lucky, about a 15 minute fix. First update and run
CWShredder
, then, post your new HijackThis
log.

and in the future, to avoid that, use firefox
as it is immune to About: Blank and other Browser hijackers!

Which one on that web page should be downloaded, the stand alone version or the "Free

About Blank is actually a hidden dll file not a virus. Hijack this and cwshredder
are only temporey fixes. You have to find the hidden file in the registry and rename
it.

CWShredder claims to remove CWS.HiddenDLL, also known as the about:blank hijacker.
Even if it does not, HijackThis can and has been successfully used, with a few extra
steps, to remove this.

Visit the page "about:blank" in Internet Explorer. If you get a page of ads, you're
not clean. If you get a blank page, you're clean, and can fix these entries to restore
the default search tool:
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
