Yes. That is the whole point of
having Product Keys and Activation.
If you are worried that you have a
Pirate Copy of Windows but don't want to call and ask you could try here first.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/default.mspx
There is a tool there that will scan
your Windows Installation and tell you if it is fake.

My question:
I have a Dell computer. It did not have Windows XP
I however toke my friend's comp's Win Xp SP1 OEM disc and install it on my computer.
I have the comp boot the cd drive first and when it installs, it never ask for cd
key. The really extremely wierd thing is when I go into system properties, the cd
key is labeled OEM. When I go to that site and verify my cd key, they say it's a
fake one. I also kill the activation using a third party program but I still wonder
how is it that they know I toke my friend's OEM disc?
I thought since his comp and my comp are both Dells. It just mine's was made before
his.

Amoung different schemes used, one is that the number is imprinted into part(s) of
the hardware that are not accessable by the user. That's all I can say.. :-/

If it's on the secret (but not so secret anymore) list of leaked keys, they'll know.
Any key you'll find on the web will be useless.
If it's a legit key from a copy that just happens to be installed on another computer,
you can uninstall the first copy and activate the second copy by phone. Microsoft
has no way of knowing if you really uninstalled the first copy, but you can't use
Windows Update or install service packs on the old insallation anymore.
If the key is for an OEM version, you can only install it on the machine that came
with that copy of XP. However, M$ says on its site that they can't identify the hash
generated from the hardware contains no information to the hardware itself, so you
can lie yourself out of that problem as well.
Of course, having two copies installed when the license allows only one violates
the EULA, but that's your own responsibility.

Does anyone know where to find keys online?

I have a legit Windows 2000 Professional disk but I dont know the Product Key because
my uncle lost the case for the C.D. so I was wondering if anyone knew where to get
un-legit C.D. keys online because I really need some keys. Thanks.

get a file sharing program like limewire and search in the programs bit for a cd
key generator and u can download a program that generates cd keys (some will not
work because they are randomly generated but eventually u will get one that hasn't
been used)

god, enough of the "read the eula", "get a legit copy", you're violating the license
by installing it on two computers", responses.
Either help answer the question or STFU.
If someone asks questions about a radar detector, you don't repsond with "yeah, but
remember, its illegal to go over xxx mph".
"Just because its legal, doesn't make it right. And, just because its illegal doesn't
make it wrong. YOU decide."

The reason for the responses that you object to relate to the terms and conditons
of using this forum, which you should read before posting. As someone else posted
elsewhere - you'll get no help in using illegal copies of Windows on this forum.

You should start a new thread for your question, not add to a two year old thread
that no one here will pay any attention to, especially with the topic it has. I
peaked because I was waiting for something else to happen.
Anyway, download and run Magic JellyBean Keyfinder. It will tell you what your
CD Key is.

Hi rl096 !
I'm with you! If they don't know the answer, they should just move on to the next
question...
... and the next...
... and the next...
Until they find one that they do know the answer to.

Hi Yousuf !
Never mind anyone who says to start a new thread. I am reading this now, and so is
anyone else who could even think to write that you should start a new thread.
These archives are here and kept for a reason -- so we can research back into 'previous'
answers.
With that said, the answer to your question is, go to this link and scroll down to
( or click on ) Replacement Product Key and follow the instructions there.

Hi Yousuf !
Ignore this arrogant twerp Joe Hepperle - the link he provided is to replace a broken
CD, not to find a lost product key !
Rich's advice was good - use a keyfinder, and start a new thread because that increases
the chance of it being read: if readers don't use the option "Promote threads to
top of list when new responses are added" they will not see recent replies to ancient
threads.
Good luck.

Joe,
You should take your own advice and only reply to posts you know the answer to -
you have provided the wrong link for this 2-year old question.
Move on, buddy (as you would say).

Please read the Gospel according to St Matthew, Chapter 7, Verses 3 to 5.
That will solve your problem.
