The best method to avoid this is to reinstall Office, choose custom install and avoid any "install on first use" in the feature list. All things must be either "install on hard disk" or "not available" in that list. But you will need the CD for that...

This should fix your problem, but it may be dagerous if you are not careful. This utility clears the configuration data that was left by a previous installation of something.

  1. Find the Support Tools on the Windows CD in the Support\Tools folder.
  2. Install these tools
  3. Run Msicuu.exe: Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. You can run it from the 'Support Tools Help' page, just scroll down to Msicuu.exe, and click it. In the upper right corner, there is an option to run the tool.
  4. Follow the instructions

If you cant find the Support Tools on your CD, you can get this one from my web page at

www.theblattners.com/tools/msiFix.zip

You'll need both .exe files included in the Zip file, and make sure you read the ReadMe.txt file first.

You need to know what installation failed that is causing the installer to appear everytime you start an executible.

DO NOT just start clearing stuff as this would be bad.

Hope this helps!

alright, i know this is an old thread, but i figured, why post a question that has already been halfway answered. my question is: How do you know what program installation failed and is causing Windows Installer to keep running? Whenever it comes up, it usually says one of 3 different things, the most often being "Fax." This is odd because I havent installed any fax software for more than 6 months. The only software I have installed recently is games. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.
