"Windows Explorer (file manager)" and Explorer crash

According to Microsoft "Windows Explorer", formerly named "File Manager" in previous versions of Windows, is also one of the tasks that "Explorer" runs. I use "Windows Explorer" often and it apparently causes "Explorer" to crash often. Is there a way to restore "Windows Explorer" automatically when "Explorer" crashes? Does Symantic sell a Norton File Manager for XP? Extensis file manager doesn't crash but it is a photo cataloqing system. Thanks, Howie

Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View, check "launch folder windows in a separate process". This is a nice file manager, it works like the ancient Norton Commander. Run some spyware scans, often that's the cause for explorer crashes.

Hi Borg, After selecting the "launch folder windows in a separate process", "windows explorer" continued to crash randomly. However my desktop and toolbars were not reset and that is a big plus. Thanks. I scanned with the Norton's protection systems and Giant's spyware, recently purchased by MS and offered as beta test. Nothing was found.

You can also scan with AdAware and Spybot, these are free too. Look here for download links. Giant's antispyware is good, but there is no antispyware program capable to find all problems. Problems like that can be caused by some registry setting left there by some improperly uninstalled software. Or by an installed program that integrates with the shell (e.g. add context menu items or toolbars). Look in the crash message details, maybe it's there some module (DLL) name or other reference to an installed program. A HijackThis log may help if you post it, but only tomorrow...
