If you can run the programs from the Start menu, right click and hold the mouse button down and drag the program short cut to the Desk Top. Make sure you copy the short cut to the desk top and not move it there, because that will remove it from the Start menu. Delete the old icon.

Hi Craig thanks for your help i really appreciate anything i can get at this point..i cant run any program from the start menu..i realized that it wasn't just my desktop items but all my programs, icons from start menu desktop, i cant even get "my computer" to work. When i click on a program to open a complete differetn program comes up. (its yazak for some reason) I quickly skimmed through some of the properties to these programs and noticed that the target info was spot on but the file was labeled as a .lnk file. sorry if im not supplying the correct info but im doing my best. :) Gloria

Were you able to unzip the file? Are you able to open a command prompt via Start->Run->cmd?
