I have a question about Top
reasons for random, fatal crashes in Windows XP and Windows 2000:
I've just read the lament of an IBM T23 owner whose laptop seems to run a CONVERT
upon shutdown/restart. The T23 I'm borrowing does the same thing, but then the hard
drive continues to
run vigorously until it appears to destroy critical OS files, and will not reboot!
Then I must run the Product
Restore (F11 at boot-up), which takes about an hour to complete, restoring the computer
(supposedly) to a factory state. Each initial first use is then OK, but when I shut
it down and turn it on for a second use, it again starts converting to NTFS at boot-up
(and eats its own OS files!) What's going on here? It's an endless, viscious cycle;
I'm afraid to shut it down, so I just use Hibernate. HAALP!

I suppose you could run msconfig once it's loaded to see if the convert command is
being set to run. For ease, I would go to Mike Lin's
Page and get his Startup Control Panel app and run it - it would seem that if
the convert command is being set to run, it would run as "Run once" item. If so,
uncheck the box by it and cross your fingers and try a reboot. Good Luck
