File association won't stick ?!

I have a question about Change a file association on the fly:

I am trying to associate file type ".crw" with the application Phase One Capture One. I right-click on a crw file and select Open With. The Capture One application is not listed, so I select "Choose Program." The application is not listed under either "Recommended Programs" or "Other Programs", so I click the Browse button, and browse to the location of the application. I select the application, "captureone.exe", and push the open button. Now the strange and mysterious part: after this, the application still does not appear listed under "Recommended Programs" or "Other Programs" in the Open With box! No matter what I try, I have been unable to make the association.

I have even reinstalled the Capture One application, which made no difference.

Can anyone help?

Control Panel->Folder Options->File Types. Or, you an use regedit to add the application to the list manually. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications. Just follow the same form as the ones already there.

My Malware Removal Instructions

Perform the following:

  1. Disable System Restore*
  2. Perform an online virus scan****.
  3. Download, update, and run these tools: Repeat as necessary until clean.
  4. If you still experience problems after doing these steps, download HijackThis* and post a log to this forum.
  5. To protect against reinfection, download and use these:
If at all possible, I recommend that you use alternative software, particularly web browsers and email clients: If this is not a viable option, or for additional protection, use these:
  6. Optionally Reenable System Restore*. Better alternatives to System Restore.

Thanks for the ideas.

When using the Folder Option applet, I get exactly the same misbehaviour .

I've considered editing the registry, and have looked at the /HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications subkey, but it's not obvious to me what to change or add. If I look at the entry in that key for Excel.exe, for instance, I see nothing that appears related to the association with .xls ... the string "xls" does not even appear under that branch.

The purpose of that key is to specify applications usable from the Open With dialog.

I opened Regedit and went to \\HKCR\Applications and there was already a mplayerc.exe key there from a previous installation. My current copy was in a new location. I deleted the key that was there and then went to Open With... again and browsed to the new copy of the executable and selected it. Now my file type is appropriately associated with MPC. Thanks Falcon for the location of the registry entries. Andy

Hi, well, my reply may be a few years late. I encountered a similar problem this
week when I tried to associate jpg and gif files with Photoshop CS3, having installed
it and uninstalling Photoshop CS2. The only way for me to edit these files in Photoshop
is by opening it from Photoshop. Open with.../Browse does not open Photoshop CS3
at all!
Also it's not in the Open with... list.

I tried both methods of editing the regedit and folder options as discussed here.
Both didn't seem to work!

I am using Windows XP.

Finally, it is now solved, similar to changing in folder options but with a different
step:
1. In the Folder's menu go to Tools/Folder Options...
2. File Types tab
3. Choose the file extension (ie, jpe, jpeg, jpg)
4. Click on "Advanced" OR "Restore" then "Advanced"
5. In Actions, choose "open", click on "edit"
6. Click on "Browse" to choose the programme you want to open with.
7. Click "Ok", "Ok" then "Close"

Using this method, even if you want to revert back to using the default Windows Photo
and Fax Viewer (by just "Delete"-ing the file extension in file types), the option
of using your program (Photoshop) will now be in the Open With... list.

Cheers!
nhazean

nhazean - thanks for posting this solution. I had a very similar experience to yours. I recently installed the CS3 suite but had an earlier version of the applications still installed so I removed them and all my file associations were screwed up. I thought I knew Windows pretty well and was frustrated that the normal steps weren't working. Your instructions did the trick. Thanks again.
