Question about 'Things that slow down system bootup'

I have a question about Things that slow down system bootup. I run windows xp.
My task manager shows 40 to 44 task at start up. I eliminated all my auto updates
and that helped a little. The problem I have is that I do not know which Task to
eliminate from start up. What is neccessary and what is not . My cpu's run 2--5 that
seems ok. Memory is 512 with 80% free space after defrag. Thanks for any help anyone
can give me.

3rd party Firewalls add some time. The more things running in the system tray
the longer the boot time. For me though I noticed when I uninstalled the 3rd party
software Firewall my boot time picked up by about 30 seconds.

Thanks Steve, I only run one firewall (Mcafee).I turned off the windows firewall.
I was told that it was not a good idea to run more than one firewall. My boot time
did improve but it is still very slow. About two minutes or more.I was just looking
at the task manager and I do not know which are safe to turn off. Thanks again.

Turning off firewall is not good these days. I'm Behind a Router now on the Main
Home Network, and don't use software firewalls on the network anymore, and on a Compuiter
I use for Web surfing in the evening not on the Router Network
I use just the XP Firewall. Just giving you a Idea of what may cause longer boot
times.

I had always relied on www.blackviper.com to get the list of needed processes for
XP.
That site does not appear to be working anymore it would be a great loss if he stopped
his web site.
This is an alternative one that is decent.

Hope this helps.

Try visiting this web site and entering the name of a file listed in the Process
tab in Task Manager. The site may give you a better idea of whether or not you can
uncheck the file on the MSCONFIG Startup tab.
