Hidden Partition (USB Drive)

I have windows XP Pro on a Sony Laptop (a year old). For a while I had three Buslink USB external drives (40gb) connected to it. Until recently, I had to restore an image (using acronis true image 8), without any signs or warning, one drive was no longer available (after the reinstall it was working fine). When I boot up the laptop, it get stuck on the process it boots windows and the drive's light is blinking in 1 second increment and making the click sound as of trying to connect yet can't. Tried several troubleshoots without sucess. later that month, I had the second drive letter to disappear and the only way I was able to access was thru partition software. I'm able to copy from it, yet nothing else. so lately i've been copying from it. So, What would u suggest I do with the first HD (unable to access it completely and the click I hear doesn't sound like a damaged completely drive like). And the second drive?

Clicking IS a problem of some kind and usually is a sign of head crashing which also can explain some of your other symptoms. (any recovery lab will tell you this) Drives can fail at anytime. If you can remove the drive(s) and install them into a desktop system, I would recommend running the drive manufacturers diagnostics utility on them to check for problems/damage. Also possible that your encloseres interface is bad and if so, may cause drive problems and will damage it. This can also be a cause of the clicking which WILL damage the drive... Either way, it sounds like a definate hardware problem that will only get worse until repaired. Good Luck!
