SendTo crashes

recently, my (virus-, and spy/adware-free) machine (xp professional sp2) shows strange behaviour. Scrolling down in the context menu and highlighting SendTo crashes the application it was called in, for instance right click a file in explorer.exe and scroll down to sendto crashes explorer.exe, right click a bookmark in IE and scroll down to sendto crashes IE, .... No Dr. Watson, No event log, No error message, just crashes and disappears from task manager. Any suggestions ?

Remove the bad shortcut from your SendTo folder.

My Malware Removal Instructions

Perform the following:

  1. Disable System Restore *
  2. Perform an online virus scan * * * * .
  3. Download, update, and run these tools: Repeat as necessary until clean.
  4. If you still experience problems after doing these steps, download HijackThis * and post a log to this forum.
  5. To protect against reinfection, download and use these:
If at all possible, I recommend that you use alternative software, particularly web browsers and email clients: If this is not a viable option, or for additional protection, use these:
  6. Optionally Reenable System Restore * . Better alternatives to System Restore.

i've emptied c:\documents and settings\all users\SendTo and c:\documents and settings\%myuser%\SendTo when i first noticed the problem, so a bad shortcut isn't the problem

I'm having this same problem. Explorer crashes as soon as I select Send To in the drop down for any file. The Send To list of items is never displayed. Requires reboot (which is extensively slow) to fix.

I'm having the same problem. If I empty my send to folder it stops crashing, but *anything* os-related (mail, desktop, compressed folder, etc.) in the send-to folder causes it to crash.

I have the same problem SENDTO does not work and crashes windows xp (goes straight to error reporting). I don't have to reboot after the crash, but it is very annoying that sendto does not work anymore. Also, I have drwatson disabled now, but before I disabled every time I would have to use the task manager to shut it down after the sendto crash. Whatever caused this sendto crash, crashes and freezes drwatson also. My IE Favorties also crash windows if I try to use sendto. But FILE-SEND SHORTCUT TO DESKTOP works fine. The strange thing with mine is I can get sendto work about 5% of the time, and when it works everything is fine until I reboot. When I reboot, same thing, sendto crashes windows just before it displays the sendto list (just as you are hovering over sendto it will crash, this happens at the point the sendto menu usually expands out if everything was working correctly).

Update: I have solved my problem. It appears that a program I installed (Document Management System or "DMS") put a shortcut in my "Send to" folder. I use the program on my work computer and it works fine, but on my home computer it causes crashes. I couldn't remove the shortcut by opening the "send to" window and deleting it because clicking on the icon and choosing an action would cause a crash! So I had to go to dos and delete the .lnk file from the command line. Now my computer works fine, but every time I install an upgrade to the DMS program, I have to go back in and delete the .lnk file again. :(

I also am having this problem... it's a shame that a solution hasn't really been found :( I've deleted all "foreign" Send To items, so that all is left are the system ones, but it still crashes. A little tip though: Just because EXPLORER.EXE crashes doesn't mean you need to restart your computer. Simply press CTRL-ALT-DEL and either a) Log out and Log back in again or even better, b): Click FILE > RUN COMMAND and type EXPLORER.EXE!

SOLUTION!!! (And one that should work for most people - yay!) Get ahold of ShellExView (Google it). It's a tiny little program that lists all of the shell extensions on your computer. Once you've loaded it up, sort the company names (this will mean that all Microsoft ones are grouped together so you can easily avoid them) and disable ALL (yes, ALL) of the NON Microsoft ones. Now... check to see if your Send To crash still happens. If it doesn't, then one of the shell extensions you've just disabled is responsible! (If it does then you problem could be more serious and I don't know the answer!) Now, enable the disabled shell extensions one-by-one, testing the crash as you go, until it crashes again. By this process of elimination you'll find out precisely what's causing your crash (for me it was the ever-so-stable Acrobat PDF 7). I hope this helps you all, like it helped me!
