Question about 'Why don't folders remember their position, sort order, or icon size?'

I have a question about Why
don't folders remember their position, sort order, or icon size?:
My problem is not actually covered by the question because I wish some genius out
there to tell me how I can solve the problem of dialogue boxes and files (even after
I have "sized" them to be about the size of a cigarette packet) always come back
on screen large again.
I hope that makes sense. But if it doesn't, let's say I am talking about My Documents.
Let's say that folder comes up on screen and covers two thirds of the screen....
so I "size" it to be the size of a cigarette packet but next time I call it up it
still covers two thirds of the screen.
I would be most grateful for any comments on this,
fraternally,
gordon

Hi Gordon, I hate this about XP. With earlier versions of Windows this wasn't a problem.
I have managed a "workable solution" for my preferences, I'll see if I can help you.
First thing you need to do is Open your My Documents folder and place it and size
it exactly how you want it to stay. Next, Click on Tools->Folder Options->View Tab->Advanced
Settings->Remember each folder's view settings (scroll down to it and check the box).
Now, the messed up thing about XP is that any point AFTER you've done this to your
My Docs folder (and it's working fine), if you later change settings to OTHER folders,
and click on "Apply to all Folders", you lose your My Docs folder settings.
Also (and this is even more annoying to me), if you open your perfectly sized and
placed My Docs folder and within that WINDOW you go UP to another folder or DOWN
to another folder, your properly placed and sized window doesn't belong to My Docs
anymore. It belongs to the NEW FOLDER you opened in that window. So since you've
checked the box "Remember each folder's view settings", now the new folder gets the
saved view settings. If you then open My Doc's again, XP often won't place a new
window directly on top of another one, so it loses part or all of it's previously
saved characteristics.
So you end up having to make sure you:
1. Size and place My Docs how you want it
2. Check the box "Remember each folder's view settings"
3. Afterward, Don't change folder settings and "Apply to all folders"
4. Within the My Docs folder, if you explore UP or DOWN to another folder, GO BACK
to My Docs before closing the Window.
This will keep My Docs opening how you want it. Not too much of a PITA once you understand
how to MAKE it work.

Gordon thanking Ken

On Saturday 14 May at 2pm Gordon says thank you Ken for your help on sizing folders.
I have not tried it yet, but I will.
I think you should write a book entitled "Simple Answers to computer problems"...or
similar -- because you write simply and use words well, like pearls rolling off tongue
kind of thing. And that's not idle flattery. I have written five books (all published).
However, I ain't bright enough to understand those Windows for Dummies and Windows
for Idiots books.
Yours was the second tip I got today (the other was how to set up a "work" slot on
the toolbar which enables me to move from one file to another without going out of
the initial file).
Thanks again, Ken,

Microsoft Stress Generator
Same S**t different Depth.
I had a problem like this and it happens if you have more than 400 folders total
on all your drives. If you go to : www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm : tweak
number 2 up's this limit to 8000. I hope this helps Adrian.

I still have a problem with the FOLDER SETTINGS.
1) I open the Windows Explorer and adjust the window to the size of approximately
half a screen.
2)Then I select |Tools |Folder Options|View|Apply to All Folders|
3)The next time the Explorer is opened it appears in the proper size. So far so good.
4) I select |My Docs| and adjust the window to the size of approximately half a
screen
5)Then I select |Tools |Folder Options|View|Apply to All Folders|
6)The next time |My Docs| is opened it appears in the desired size. OK.
But now the Explorer has lost its carefully adjusted settings and returned to the
Windows defaults!
In other words, if I fix the WINDOWS EXPLORER then MY DOCS gets messed up and if
I fix MY DOCS then the EXPLORER gets fouled up.
Anybody knows a solution to this PITA?

Well, the problem has been solved. As Ken pointed out in step 3)
Afterward, Don't change folder settings and "Apply to all folders".
In other words DO NOT CLICK |Apply to All Folders| after having adjusted the view
of either Explorer or the My Documents folder. This is kind of counterintuitive isn't
it?. But not really surprising, coming from Microsoft...
