And the fact that it hangs in safe mode at mup.sys doean't mean much either, that's where it always hangs if it's going to. I don't have any ideas to offer, but wanted to suggest that you not get tunnel vision as to the cause. It is a strange one. To me it seems that the primary difference is that the computer doesn't power off on a soft boot and therefore some components may be retaining some information or behaviour from before the restart. The most obvious contenders here are RAM and the CMOS, yes?
