Question about 'How to Boot from DOS to Windows'

I have a question about How
to Exit to DOS:
Exiting to DOS isn't my problem. What I would like to know is how to boot to Windows
XP Pro from the DOS prompt?
I start the computer and go to the DOS prompt to do work there. When I finish I have
to do a warm reboot.
I've tried typing "Win" and "exit" among others at the DOS prompt with no success.
This trick worked fine in Win 98 and 98se, but not in XP.

Win XP is different from previous versions of Windows, as it isnt built on top of
DOS, it is an operating system with its own hardware access. In previous versions,
they loaded DOS, THEN used DOS to load the rest of the OS. Windows XP NEVER loads
DOS, so you wont be able to go to XP unless you actually boot into it. That said,
your post states "I start the computer and go to the DOS prompt to do work there."
- how do you get to the DOS prompt? Are you actually booting into XP and then running
the command prompt, or doing something different. If you are doing what I think,
this is not actually the DOS prompt, but a SIMULATION built into XP (I know that
might seem like a minor difference, but its critical - XP doesnt actually contain
DOS at all, it just looks like it). In this case, the way to return to XP should
be to "exit", so if thats not working, you have a different problem. Let us know
how you're getting to DOS, and we can probably work out a way to get you back to
XP.

When I turn the computer on it gives me a choice of booting to "Windows XP" or "Windows"
in 30 seconds. The default choice is "Windows XP". When I select "Windows", which
seems to me to be DOS, I can do my work there.
For example, I run F-Prot Anti-Virus for DOS from this prompt for a clean scan, which
checks ALL files and folders. At the C:\ prompt, I type "cd\F-Prot", "enter", and
then "F-Prot" to execute the program. Doing this has worked fine since I purchased
the computer.
I've tried the "Command Prompt" in Windows XP to do scans, but there are files and
folders which are in use and cannot be scanned. Your are correct and I can "exit"
back to XP.
I'm also a fan of F-Prot. Free and efficient. No junk in the registry or anywhere
else. Only one folder to delete when new versions come along. I've been using it
for 12+ years. (No affilliations).
After re-reading your reply I understand about having to actually reboot into XP.
But I was hoping for a shortcut, to make it a little easier, rather than having to
restart the computer. Thanks for the reply.

OK, that makes sense. You WILL have to reboot (but I think you've got that now) -
you could try http://www.installsite.org/pages/en/tt_related.htm I've not tried it
myself, but might make it easier to automatically reboot for you (with just a command
rather than going through the POST (power on self-test)). Best of luck.
