Yep, this works. A demo screensaver I installed switched on the text background but left the option checked for "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop". (Baffling at first sight!) The problem was solved by unchecking it, clicking Apply, then checking it and clicking Apply again. The icon label background then became transparent again.

Blah..blah..blah...Here's how to fix it for those of you using XP Pro. Disable the drop shadows. Open the mmc...(run..type mmc). Add the group policy snap in to your local computer. Under Administrative template disable Active Desktop. Re-enable the drop shadows. Enbale the active desktop under the MMC. None of the other suggestions worked for me....but this did the trick. Jonah
