Question about 'Things that slow down system bootup'
Saturday, June 18, 2005 at 5:27 am Posted by Jim Bienvenu
(23 messages posted)
I have a few questions related to correcting my system booting slowly. Literally,
it takes 10-15 minutes for the Windows to become active, so I plan to try the other
things noted in these postings.
After talking with a friend, he suggested I add RAM. I have an HP Compaq NX9010
laptop with 128 MB of RAM with a 2.6 Ghz Celeron processor. I just purchased 512
MB of RAM that I need to install. My questions are these.
1) I have two RAM slots... can I simply install the memory in the available slot,
or do I need to install it in the slot the 128 MB is in and remove the 128 MB?
2) If I simply install it in the existing slot, is the memory additive, so my computer
will now have 640 MB of RAM (128 + 512)?
3) Can I ultimately replace the 128 MB of RAM with another 512 MB of RAM for 1024
MB?
4) Lastly, are there any special precautions or steps I must follow to install this
additional memory?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

There is a limit to how much ram your system will support. This can be found in the
system manual or the manufacturers website. Another easy way to check is to go to
a memory site like crucial.com and plug in your model and it will tell you the max
memory details. Sometimes you can mix ram and sometimes not. Good luck!!!

Hi,
1) You can install memory in the available slot
2) Memory is additive, however i know a person whose computer didn't recognise all
the extra memory he put into it
3) Refer to the post before mine
4) Here are some good directions:

http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/1224

XP OPERATING SYSTEM
NX9010
I would NOT try mixing the modules. Just take the 128Mb module out and put the 512
Mb module in its place. According to the above link your laptop will accept two 512
Mb modules.
I think you'll find that the improvement from 128 to 512 Mb is what you are looking
for.
Boot times will be faster and installing the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service from
Microsoft should speed up your shut-down time.

Try adding the 512. If it doesn't work then remove the 128 and out the 512 in that
slot. The more memory you have the better your system will operate. If you can afford
another 512MB get it so you have 1gig of memory. Worth every penny.

Also, remember to go through MSCONFIG and turn off unnecessary startup programs.
The only thing you really need is antivirus software. If you are using McAfee Security
Suite or Norton Security Suite they can really bogged down a system. A celeron processor
is not known for being a work horse, so you can't push it very hard without the system
slowing down. When increasing performance, it's not just one thing like memory,
it is also processor, hard drive type (ATA or SATA, etc.), Front Side Bus on MainBoard,
and so on. So, if you are having trouble at start-up the BEST quick fix is going
to start\run\msconfig and adjust the startup tab. Go ahead and turn off everything
and do a quick reboot and see if that helps. Also do a pc tune-up, like running
Adaware or Spybot, Disk Clean-Up, and Disk Defrag. Hope this helps. Oh, as far
as the memory thing goes, the guys before were right, it all depends on the board
and manufacture settings. I doubt your celeron board can handle 1gb of ram. Cheers,
- Mike

you've got bigger things than memory or msconfig. restart in safe mode and reactivate
your msconfig files. i work on pc's every day and msconfig is one thing i hit first
and never have an adverse like you did. i'd consider a clean install of xp, especially
if it runs fine in safe mode.

I cannot understand a system taking that long to boot up. Unless you're exagerating
big time you've got problems other than RAM. Get HijackThis, make a logfile and
post it here. Check your startup menu and desktop first; they could be overloaded.
Open Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del), see what processes are running and check them
one by one. Get one of the experts here to look at your registry (hijackthis logfile).
I booted up in three minutes with 128 Mg RAM (it was an old machine). 15 minutes
is out of the question.

seems like every one forgot to answer question 4, make sure you discharge any static
electricity from your body by touching a grounded metal object.

Phew! So it isn't just me then? I recently installed McAfee Security suite on my
PC - it's been a pain in the bum ever since. The system is painfully slow all the
time - is this usual? I keep it squeaky clean - always running spybot/spyware blaster
and diskclean and defrag etc. Is it just me, or is this latest work of art from McAfee
a major pain to others too?

Mcaffe and Norton are now some of the worse protection to use because.....people
who create viruses go after well known software to disable them and Norton's and
Mcaffee's security suite are terrible. Use Nod32 or Eset.com instead.
