1. How dangerous is this or this is an annoyance only?

2. Very hard to delete. Is there a proven one-click method that will not involve
the use of HijackThis and/or registry edit?

Thanks. I am doing this for a friend.

It's not just an annoyance, and there is no one-click method to removing it. It does
involve the use of HJT along with a few other steps. It's not that easy to get rid
of, but it's not the most difficult either.

Here's an example of the steps they use. Check post #2:

You can post on that forum for assistance. Just follow there instructions, and you
should manage just fine.

Thanks, Carol for the links. I'll give it a try but it sure is a daunting task for me. Another option is what my friend told me. Reformat. He does not have that much programs to reinstall. Is "fdisk /mbr" still required to clean everything up?

No, "fdisk /mbr" does NOT format the drive. That's command rewrites the master boot
record. If you decide to go the formatting route, I suggest you start a new thread
for advice.

I think the aurora removal procedure would be a simpler way to go. That's just me.
I know it 'looks' overwhelming, but I'd give a try. People have learned a lot in
the process of cleaning malware off their system, so it wouldn't be in vain.

Just to clarify, if his system came with XP pre-installed by the mfgr., formatting/reinstalling
won't be an option, "unless" he has a genuine Microsoft XP CD. OEM installs usually
don't, but you may know that. Ex: my Dell came with a "Dell" XP reinstallation CD.

Otherwise, this is a good resource: Clean Install Windows XP...
