problem with starting up: operating system not found

Hi, all, I've been having problems with booting up my Dell laptop and am in need of some help here. I just recently reformatted my HD. A couple of weeks later, my laptop starts having problem when I boot it up. What happens is that the DVD-Rom drive would make a loud clicking sound, and then my laptop would give me the following message: Intel(R) Boot Agent Version 4.0.19 Copyright (C) 1997-2001, Intel Corporation PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM. Operating system not found Then I'd turn the computer off and turn it back on and repeat the same process for 8-10 times, and eventually it would boot up. This only happens if I leave my computer turned off for more than 4-5 hours. My DVD-Rom was having trouble playing DVD before, but after I took it out of the drive and put it back in, it works fine, so I don't know if this is a HD problem or a DVD drive problem. And I don't know if this is because I reinstalled XP just a while ago. So far I've tried taking the battery and the HD out and put them back in, but it's not helping the situation. Please help! It's driving me crazy! Thanks!

It sounds like it cannot see the hard drive to boot from, or it is not trying to
boot from the hard drive.

You will have to go into your BIOS to check some things. Check the boot order.
Remove any reference to "LAN boot ", or at the very least, make it last on the list.
Make sure the hard drive is one of the choices. A good booting order is:
Optical drive (CD or DVD), Floppy, Hard Drive, and LAN would be last if you can't
remove it completely.

Now that you are in the BIOS, make sure that it recognizes the hard drive. Perhaps
BIOS can't see it because of bad connection, or bad cable, or some other reason,
such as hard drive itself going bad.

Check and clean the connections to the cables and hard drive.

Check to see if there are any upgrades for the BIOS available from the manufacturer.

Let us know if any of these ideas help.

Capt. Lon

i believe it is the HDD going sour.I'd back up everything, see if you could D/L the
HD Manufacturers Diagnostic Program and check how good the Harddrive is.Clicking
on Bootup is usually the Hard-Drive. lol werner

Search for these symptoms at Dell's support pages.

Some models of Dell laptops are notorious for having problems starting as you describe.
Some have been repurchased by Dell, some have class-action suits pending.

Hi,
I am having a similar problem but here is what brought it on...
My brilliant yet impulsive son has been doing all kinds of crazy things to his XBOX
hard drive and decided one day to unplug my hard drive and plug his xbox hard drive
into my computer. Oooopppss...PC not working every since. I get the same error messages
about PXEMOF etc...but I can not get the bios settings to load when I press F2 my
only option is setup and network boot.
I have checked all cables
Checked jumpers
Checked Set up settings
Tried to load off of restore disk
reset CMOS..
and am going nuts...any other thoughts or suggestions

I'm having this same problem but with my IBM thinkpad. We don't have a boot or restore disc for the laptop so my husband figured he could fix it by putting the restore disc from our Nobilis computer. now the only thing we can get into is f1 IBM bios setup utility. I use my laptop for work and I'm at a loss as to what to do. Please help. Pam
