What is Microsoft up to now?

Hi all, I just visited the Windows Update Site and apparently MS wants us to download new Update Software. I'm not sure that I trust them as they might want to sneak in SP2 when I'm not looking. Does anyone have any information about this new developement?

Dear Helen,

I have wondered about this myself, and afraid I don't have the answer for you, -
I hope that someone is able to answer you informatively in the near future.

I am also sorry to bother you with this question, but after seeing your 'personal
signature' of the little dog icon and your name over it fading in etc, I thought
it was so very cute and wanted to ask you how one goes about getting this sort of
'personal signature'..? Ironically I have taken a very basic IT course, but did not
end up completing the course. I am sorry to hassle you, but I would I would be so
appreciative if your were to answer me even just briefly...?

Many thanks and kind regards,

Chey

just go through them one by one on which ones you want, say no to anything sp2...i would read through each other first with the "more info" tab on each. im not to sure cuz i hadn't checked in a while but they are probably thier infomous malware quick scan and patchs to windows....for whatever IE, spywareblaster will take care of in a day or two, usually.

Just guessing but I would assume patches etc are actually part of the SP2 upgrade,
but just parts, not whole thing.

OR a patch for SP2 and SP1. If you download you won't end up with SP2, to be sure
read fine print. On the brightside you don't really need them.

Joe, This is something new. Previously, the site scanned and came up with the recommended updates which one could choose or not. Now there is a separate window and a download that is unfamiliar. I guess I'll hold off on the updates until some M$ fan can tell me what it is all about. Not that I dislike Microsoft. It surely beats those darn Apple computers, even with all the flaws.

It's just another cosmetic change to windows update site. I updated the software and it didn't try to force any unwanted updates on me. It added a few new ones, but still gives you a choice.

As I replied to Joe, this is something new. Since it's the second Tuesday and MS updates are due, I suppose I'm one of the first eager beavers to check out the site. Also the CERT bulletin came out with the new threats. Maybe Dan S will come along with an explanation if I'm lucky. Till then I'll hold off on the updates.

It's the update software itself which you download and install. Allows MS to reduce
the size of their updates by not including the update software.

I also downloaded and installed it, no problems. Note that I am already at SP2 on
both my desktop and laptop.

Oh no, a victim of the dreaded SP2? Thanks. I'll fearlessly go forth and fetch the updates (except for SP2)

I don't know that this is of any use to you Helen, but I actually turn on the Windows Update notification on my computer but only to the stage of being notified about availability - definitely no automatic downloads! When I get a notification I click the link to the KB article concerned and read the info on the update - then (if I decide to apply that particular patch) I click the download link from the KB page which lets me download/save to disk and install from there. This also lets me install patches individually and check for problems instead of compounding the issue with multiple installs. It works for me and I am able to burn any patches I have saved to CD for any future reinstalls of Windows. PS. I love your signatures too! Nicky.

They have new functionality in the update software. It allows for quicker downloading of the updates and it contains a somewhat modifed interface. You are still given the option to chose the updates that you want.
"Victim" of sp2? I don't think I would call it that. SP2 has been out for a what a year, give or take. Most, if not all, reputable software shops have fixes available for their products to make them work with SP2. I have been running SP2 for about a month less than it has been available. Absolutely no problems whatsoever with it. Had a slight glitch with our backup software, but that was due to the sp2 firewall. Turned off the firewall, since we don't need it because we are protected in other ways, and it worked like a charm. Too many scare tactics being used to try and deter people away from it.

Clean Install XP
