Windows backup utility does not succeed..

I have just read MS Support docs about my problem: "Windows backup utility does not
succeed when you use a USB tape drive and/or when you have the "verify" files on".
It seems to say that SP2 will solve the problem, but it doesn't, as I have SP2. I
wonder if there is a fix for this somewhere in Microsoft support, and I'm just not
finding it?

With issues like that - you'll have to go through the Hotfix solution - which is
to call them and plead your case. They don't make these Hotfixes generally available
as they will probably break more things than they will fix and need particular support.
It may be more efficient in the long run to go with an alternative backup method

As Paulina suggested, use an alternative back up utility. This is an excellent free
one that many of the forum regulars use.
